Puma Locking Blades from 1980s - 01/21/20 08:00 PM

What were the model names of the black handled, 5" or so solid blades Pumas that came in black nylon sheath called? These were manufactured in Germany I believe in the 1980s before production moved to China in 90s. Picked up two from a friend's deceased father's estate sale recently and they are awesome condition and sharpen better and faster than any hunting knife I have ever owned. Handle is a waffled hard plastic.

Seem to remember it selling for around $125_$150 in the early to mid 1980s. Is this the original version of the Puma General?

I have a Puma Game Warden knife that was made in about 1973 and its still in great shape. Stays sharp forever.

Excellent Blades.

A buddy of mine has several Puma knives and every one has a tiny round indention on the blade where it was tested for Rockwell Hardness. Pretty Cool.

You can see the indentions (they look like specks on the blades) in Tbar's collection photo.

Just my .02,

My ol' Puma Game Warden with the wood sides is still gutting, skinning & cutting up deer. It's 45+ years old. I can barely read the writing on the blade any more.

So looking up the date serials on them, I determined I have two large Captain locking blades, both 1983 and two 1996. PROTEC Zytals. Like the half serrated blades of the Zytals and the clean look of the Captains. For $100 couldn't be happier to have gotten all 4. Great knives.

A great buy indeed!
I have both the Plainsman and Game Warden lock blades They’ve given me more than 50 years of service as my go to knives for field dressing deer elk, bear and hogs. They are easy to sharpen and hold a sharp blade. Both are still tight without a hint of blade wobble.
