DIY scales

I have two Old Hickory kitchen knives that I am fond of but the handles are cracked and broken. I would like to make some new scales from Mesquite from my property. I'm wondering how long should the wood be seasoned before making scales? I tried a piece that was cut three years ago and it cut and sanded just fine but one scale split when I drilled it.

Was the piece of wood in out of the weather for the 3 years? If so it should have been dry enough. I use Mesquite burl quite a bit. It's prone to have cracks in it from drying but I cut pieces until I can get some big enough for scales that don't have any cracks in them. I've never had any crack when I drilled them. Just use a sharp bit and don't use a lot of pressure when drilling.
