52100 EDC - 04/13/19 07:33 PM
I just posted my first forged knife, so why not post the second one as well. This one was forged from the outer race of a large bearing. I have a whole new respect for bearing steel. It does not want to move move under a hammer unless it is almost white hot. Blade was tempered for two one hour cycles at 400* and will still skate my 60 HRC file. I swore I would never polish a blade to a mirror finish, but I did this one anyways. Handle scales are black walnut burl that I harvested, dried, and stabilized personally. Black G10 liners, brass pins, and some epoxy finish off the knife. I wanted to use larger, mosaic pins, but this steel destroyed my drill bits even after multiple attempts at annealing it. I will drift my holes next time I use 52100. Knife will live the remainder of its life in a 8 oz leather sheath wrapped in some 3 oz boa skin pattern leather. I welcome all feedback.
