Memorial in the Sam Houston

Memorial in the Sam Houston - 08/16/20 07:33 PM

While scouting /hiking in the Sam Houston today I came across this memorial. It was a couple of hundred yards off any trail and no markers around to draw attention to its presence. It was pure chance I caught the shape through the trees while looking an area over.
I just looked him up when I got home and it seems he was USDA Forest Service Fire Fighter who died last March while working a burn in the Sam Houston.

Based on it being as "remote" as it was, Im guessing this may have been the area he died.
I never caught this story in the news, but it's a humbling reminder of how much goes into these public lands of ours.

Found something similar last year up here in the Gallatin Nat'l Forest in Montana. Went back in there this year to find it again, and it was right after Father's Day. Must have been one heck of a Dad to someone!!

I did not know about Daniel Laird but I am assuming that memorial marks the site where the helicopter crashed. Sad story.
