LBJ Grasslands - 04/27/20 03:23 AM

This summer I was planning on heading up to the LBJ Grasslands for my first time hunting. I'm in Fort Worth so LBJ is relatively close to me, and I picked it because I wanted to do some fishing/camping while I was there too. Is LBJ a decent place to hunt for small game?
Is there a better public place for beginner hunting? I'd like if I would be able to fish/camp while I am there as well.
Thanks so much, appreciate any advice you can give me. I've never been hunting before and I wanted to teach myself, so any tips/experience at LBJ, or just in general, would be well received. If it helps any, I have a 20 gauge semi-auto shotgun.

I hunted LBJ a lot back in the 70's and 80's. It would be a good place to get your feet wet as far as hunting. It does get crowded during the gun season though, wear plenty of orange! Black Creek and Cottonwood are the best spots for camping. And the fishing is actually pretty good in the ponds/lakes on the area. Plenty of sources online for info on LBJ regarding rules and regs. There's also an active Facebook page for LBJ hunting.

Animals at LBJ are weary as they know hunters are after them. Squirrels should be the easiest small game to hunt. Find a area with a creek that runs through it and walk it slow. Be quiet and listen for noise of barking in the trees. You should be successful. The best time for small game hunting is right after several days of heavy stormy weather. The animals are out in the day because they are hungry.
