Lake waco hogs

Lake waco hogs - 12/27/19 03:21 AM

Just discovered lake waco is open for hog hunting most of the year as far as i can tell. Looks like archery and shotgun slugs only. I plan on calling the corps headquarters for more details but thought I'd run it by the fine folks on THF as well. Am i reading correctly? Anyone got any experience out there? I don't live real close so im worried i might waste a weekend getting setup if im wrong. It sure would be nice to take the tent and a handful of shells to hopefully come home with some rabbits or tree rats or wild pigs. Seems like a great opportunity that i may have been overlooking.

I live in the liberty hill area. I frequently hunt granger for dove and pigs. Just thought being able to use a shotgun for hogs may be a nice change of pace. Haven't seen much about waco on here so didnt know if it was a hidden gem or barren wasteland or something in between.

I know you can take hogs during archery season. Drawings are done each year for general deer season. We do it every year. I can't remember when the drawing is but my brother does it for us and puts me on the list of hunters in his group. During the assigned dates you are the only one allowed in the assigned section for your group. The biggest issues I've had out there are the tree hugging students from Baylor that will walk right through your set and say they are doing a school project during the Thanksgiving Holiday or the local residents riding dirt bikes down the trails even when they are not allowed. We still try to draw a hunt and pick the sections farthest from neighborhoods but it's very populated around there now and some sections are closed as a sanctuary.

Oh yeah. I've seen 1 hog in 5 years during the daytime.

Is the drawing for hogs? Or just deer? On the COE website it appears you can hunt hogs basically year round

It's for deer but you can take hogs while hunting deer. If you get drawn they will give you paperwork to display on your vehicle that you are allowed to be there during those dates and in that unit.

You might want to look into the Logjam outside of Moody. Might be called Horseshoe Bend. Hog hunting with bow or shotgun.I have friends that hunt it. The front gate is locked so you have to do quite a bit of walking. They locked the entrance due to people destroying the driving paths.

I have walked a couple hunting areas there before when passing through the area and had time to spare. I felt there was too much hunting and recreation pressure to make it worthwhile for a dedicated hunting trip. The last time I stopped there coincided with the spring sandbass/crappie runs and had a crazy amount of people fishing adjacent to the hunting area I was walking.

The gates are locked but you can still hunt it. Just sign in and walk. If you sell firewood I have been to your place and picked up some oak. I hunt a place down the road from you.

I pulled out folks quite a few times down there when I was in HS. Got stuck a couple times myself. When it rained you had to know where to drive because what looked like a puddle was a deep hole with deeper ruts. There were a few guys that lived right by it that had trucks on 40s that would go play. When you fall in their ruts it was over.
