Oklahoma Crosstimbers WMA?? - 07/19/19 12:48 PM

Anybody know anything about the Crosstimbers WMA just West of Marietta? Evidently it used to be a large private ranch managed for Trophy WT and just in last year or so the State has it and I believe archery only draw type hunts? Never hunted public land nor hunted Okla so looking for any info on WT hunting in that area or along Red River in south central to south west okla. Curious about pricing for private land and anything about size of deer and deer density. Mostly asking for friends but you never know.

I have been there hunting other game. The area is as it's namesake. It is a typical Cross Timbers ecological area with a mix of woods and open areas. I would not call it a high deer density area, but the wma probably has a higher deer density than much of the surrounding area. Lot of agriculture and cattle around there. I remember when the WMA opened that it had a high buck to doe ratio that they were they were going to level out. I never heard or read anything about it being a trophy wt ranch before. I assume you are aware of the Oklahoma license structure. The gun season is short and it can get expensive if hunting all deer seasons. Archery, Primitive, and Gun are all separate licenses that cost around $300 each for non residents.

Thanks Sniper, that's good info. No, I didn't know about the license costs. I had heard that it was about 150. It wouldn't be a deal killer but its high enough to be factored in.

Just the general license is over 175 now. You don't need the general license to hunt deer, just the deer license for the season your hunting. No license needed for hogs on private land, but I think they still have the regulation if hunting them during any deer season, you must have the corresponding deer license to hunt hogs if hunting them during deer season. But you would still need the general license to Turkey hunt, so pretty much add another 175 plus Turkey Tags in addition to the $300 for each Deer season. Where Oklahoma hunting license cost is a good deal would be for a person who only bow hunts as the Archery Deer License is good through all Oklahoma Deer Seasons and allows you 6 total deer. But a non resident hunting all Oklahoma Deer seasons with Bow, Muzzle Loader, and Rifle along with both Turkey seasons is going to spend well over $1000 in license costs each year.
