New to Texas hunting - 01/11/19 09:20 PM

Hi all I am from Northern Ireland and new to hunting in Texas. I am teaching my 9 year old fieldcraft and bushcraft and figured he should be taken out hunting since he is now proficient at shooting his .22.

I am in the Plano area and any recommendations for a decent place for rabbit/squirrel hunting would be appreciated? I was looking at Caddo Grasslands and found slightly different information on 'seasons' for those critters. One place states there is no closed season (meaning we can hunt at any time year round correct?), and another states that they are in season from Oct-Feb and the month of May only.

On another note- I am teaching him navigation and wondering if the forestry offices have topographical maps on site (as opposed to the trail maps or hunting area maps)

Thank ya!

See tread above, everything you need is there. You might want to consider the National Forests, rabbits are not protected and can be hunted 12 mo. a year. Would not advise gong during deer season though.

LBJ grasslands would be an excellent place to hunt squirrels or bunnies. No closed season on either. And as far as I know .22s are legal. I map showing the area boundaries should be sufficient and look for the little yellow signs(boundary markers)on the fence so you don't wander onto private property and you will be fine.I doubt the office has topo maps, you would have to get one of those from another source.

It probably isn't open during the government shutdown but there is a park office for the LBJ Grasslands in Alvord, TX. They have some good maps for sale. I would verify if .22s are legal. I was under the idea that it was shotgun or muzzleloader only.

Hmm,you might be right about no .22s allowed. Poking around on Google it seems they might have banned .22s along with centerfire rifles. Better call the Game Warden for Wise county to find out for sure. I hunted LBJ back in the late 70's-early 80's and ALL firearms were legal back then.

Thanks for the info guys...it seems rifles are not allowed at LBJ unfortunately, looks like my closet spot will be Caddo for now.
