Black Gap WMA - rifle hunt

Black Gap WMA - rifle hunt - 12/17/18 05:24 PM

I got picked for a black gap rifle hunt the few week of January. Has anyone been there? Does anyone have any expert advice?

Is the mule deer rut going on this late? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated

I don't know if the rut is going on, but I hunted there last year for a javelina hunt around this time and saw 1 javelina and about 10-12 mule deer, about 50/50 buck/doe. It is a fun place to hunt, and very challenging with the terrain. Bring extra boots.

How big were the mule deer bucks that you saw? It would be nice to know what's out there so i don't shoot a small one of the first day.... thank you very much for the response

I honestly can't remember. The biggest one we saw was on the side of the road when we were driving back to where we were staying. A lot of the other ones were on the sides of mountains, or running across washed out areas 300-400 yards out. I've seen pics from other drawn hunts of some very nice bucks. They are out there.

Has anyone hunted black gap south east of the head quarters? Does anyone have any tips?

We are heading down now. Wish us luck

I hope this picture comes through. We had a great hunt. Our group of 3 shot 3 mule deer. We hunted south of the head quarters. Our area was about 5000 acres but we saw 90% of the deer on 500 acres or less. There's not alot of deer at black gap but there are some mature bucks. The staff was awesome and it was a great hunt.

I missed it but I heard that one of the other hunters cut off his deer head with a chainsaw!!! Wish i could have got that on video

Congrats on a great hunt. I have seen antler skull plates cut of with chain saw. Little messy but it will walk right through, it does dull the chain quickly
