Public hunting question.

Public hunting question. - 12/03/18 02:38 AM

With proper permit, license, proper clothing is it possible to just walk in and shoot a deer?

I know simple but has it ever been done. Execuse the rookie question.

I am thinking you have to go deep in the public land, spend a couple of days camping even scouting the previous months to find signs of deer. Possibly need an atv. No way you can just do an outing and get that lucky.

Yes it is possible, but not likely. Saw lots of deer in DCNF, most were seen around the creeks. Wade the creek and climb out and check the sides every few yards. You Must Be VERY Quiet.

Totally depends on which piece of public property you are talking about. I'm getting kinda old(62) and my days of hiking way back into the woods are over.I seldom hunt more than 400 yards from where I park and I see plenty of deer and hogs. Including some REALLY big ones.

Keep in mind you can only shoot a doe at LBJ during Doe Days. Good luck finding a legal buck out there.

cheers Deer hunts on WMA's hunted closer due ta alien body parts... Did the deer archery only hunts after unit #120 shut down. Seen plenty of legal "13+inch" deer. & b the first ta say, not the best hunter being in right place right time.... had two run right under stand & plenty just outa range or thick brush preventing shot, archery limits range, so increse deer #ers. With hunting close on public land, take good with bad, other hunters gong to & fro, yet they might push things around. Public land NO BAITING, so knowing what ta look for tis big help with finding right place Leasing, "exccecative hunts[/i" people walk, rice to stand & sit [i]waiting... Hog hunts.... before You-tube did the none gutting easier & faster back packing, Finding hogs was always easy part, get away from main traffic usually several miles back in were most hunters dont venture pushing up hogs, or were not much orange tis seen, less pressure. Still enjoy me poormans food stamp hunts...

my 2cents on OP YES it CAN be done .... opinions might vary...

Well I grew up in the SHNF and I can personally attest to the the fact that my Uncle James would come for one weekend a season and shoot a buck by just sitting a pipeline at a creek crossing. Always pissed me off because I would scout all year long and rattle and grunt and make mock scrapes and all he did was drink coffee and smoke cigarettes and did just as good as me. Now this was before antler restrictions and only a couple of the bucks he killed would still be legal

Had a legal buck sneak up behind me last Wednesday on a public spot. Suspect he came to my calling and got spooked somehow. Yes it is possible.
Same hunt when I was packing it up to leave had a 3 point chase 2 does towards me. The does split directions and he couldn't decide which one to chase and came 20' from running over me. He kept turning his head to each doe and didn't notice me until he was right up on me. It was comical watching him confused on which doe to chase. Hopefully I can get one of my boys on that three pointer.

I’ve killed plenty of deer on public land over the years. Had good luck on old type 2 land around Rusk years back. Then killed deer on Wright Patman (bow season only for me there), Grapevine and Sam Houston National Forest. Most killed by bow but some deer and pigs by rifle at Sam Houston. Only hunted Caddo once a few years back and only one day. Did find some good deer sign out there and believe with a little time put in you could be successful there. Good luck.

Id say your odds are 100 to 1 if it is your first time

Yes but most areas are restricted to limited range weapons (shotgun/muzzleloader), a good bit of it is archery only now, don't just expect to take your centerfire rifle and go out to texas public land, especially in north texas.
