Guadalupe Delta WMA - 13 year old son youth hunt - 10/08/18 04:38 PM

Any tips for hunting Guadalupe Delta WMA? My 13 year old son just got drawn for the youth deer hunt and we are driving down Friday. He's excited to go and look forward to being with him but this is totally different terrain than what I'm used to. Any tips on good deer locations, techniques, good places to stay, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Call the people running the hunt. they will usually be very helpful with information and places that can help with accommodations. Good luck

Thanks pigplinker. I'll shout at the hunt coordinators when I arrive.

Anyone have any direct knowledge of hunting this WMA?

I don't have any direct knowledge of the area, but hunted Honey Creek SNA last year. I called ahead to the area and they were very helpful on accommodations in the area plus what was allowed and not allowed. I would call before getting there. I hunted Elephant Mtn on a Javalina hunt and found out once there we were not allowed to have a predator call in our possession on the hunt. Now I always call and check before arriving at a hunt. Good luck on the hunt.

He didn't shoot the big buck they claimed was running around but he did shoot 4 pigs, one of which had 3 legs and was running flat out across an open muddy field. It was funny to watch as it did a superman head first sliding dive with front leg stretched out (notice I said leg and not legs). I bet we replayed that one 50 times on the way home. Wish I had it on film. I'm still laughing about that one.

When we told the TPWD staff he shot a 3-legged pig they said "oh no, he shot gimpy. That's our mascot". apparently "gimpy" has been seen a number of times and my son was the heartless one who took him out.
