Kerr County - Kerrville Schreiner Park - 09/08/17 10:38 PM

Has anyone hunted private lands antlerless/spike in Kerr County. Does anyone have info on this hunt?

Thanks

So not much of a hunt and more of a slaughter?

Still gonna be a hunt they are hunted all around that area. Axis are very wary of anything out of place.

Has anyone had experience hunting out there?

I was drawn for a hunt there Dec. 11-13. From what I understand they give you an area to hunt where you set up a ground blind or popup. A buddy of mine went there a few years ago. He and his wife both killed a WT, but didnt have a shot on any exotics. You can bait with corn, alfalfa, etc.

This years quota is one WT (antlerless or spike) and 3 exotics.

Hoping it is a successful hunt. I'd really like to kill an exotic. However, I am hunting the 3rd session, so I imagine the animals will be a bit more cautious. I have heard that you can rattle a bag of potato chips and the deer will come to you since most campers feed them that way.

I will be there Dec 4-6 with corn and potato chips in hand. Really hoping to come out successful since this will be my only opportunity to hunt this year, most likely.

Try sweetfeed for the axis, they can smell the molasses, heard the same thing about the chips

We just returned from a youth hunt there this weekend. Had several shot opportunities on big bucks but weren't allowed to take them. The mature doe were very nervous and elusive at our blind locations. Bucks would walk right on out. Never saw any exotics. Only one doe taken out of 6 youth hunters for the weekend. The park was beautiful with great facilities. We had a fun time on this hunt.

Did you use anything besides corn?

I am perplexed at the quota for the drawn hunts coming up. 1 WT antlerless/spike and 3 exotics allowed. From what I have heard, the exotics are in limited numbers.

Glad you guys had a good time. I will be there a week from today.

The parks want to get rid of exotics because they are not native

I understand their rationale, but the quota numbers seem odd if there aren't many around.

Im sitting here on day 1. Hoping for an animal to come out.

We were very excited after hearing the 3 exotic limit thinking there would be high numbers. I think only 1 of 6 hunters saw a couple axis out of range while in blind all weekend. We never saw any driving thru park? They had popup blinds and corn provided for us. The doe did not like the pop ups being out there. If I was going by myself I believe it would be better to sit in the brush.

Re: Kerr County - Kerrville Schreiner Park - 12/05/17 03:28 AM

I saw 5 does and 1 6-pnt whitetail buck. I was able to get my doe tonight. Total: 4 does taken, 1 blackbuck and a guy missed an axis. I can confirm 2 other guys that had shots on a wt doe but kept getting busted when they tried to pull back. I spent a lot of time picking my blind location at least 30 yards away and covering it really well with brush. The deer that came in on me never hinted that they saw me and after I took my doe 3 of them returned including the buck within 2 minutes. Pay special attention to your blind placement and cover and get some distance away from your corn IMHO. My dad was one of them that had his blind 20 yards from the corn and not brushed in well. They knew something was wrong and he was never able to get a shot. If he had spent 15 more minutes preparing his blind I truly believe he would have been successful tonight but I can't tell him that. After doing my research on this place I'd say that these numbers tonight were abnormally high but I am not complaining.

Congrats on the doe! Could you post a picture of your blind brushed in? What unit are you hunting?

Good luck during the rest of your hunt!

I was fortunate enough to get a doe yesterday afternoon. Also saw a good 8 pt. No other hunters killed anything yesterday. One guy missed an axis doe.

Back at it this morning. Just had a 4pt cruise by. Waiting on an axis!

I drew area 9. I saw two WT spikes this morning both hung around for 45 minutes and were broadside at 15 yds. But I had already shot my whitetail. frown

Exact same thing that happened to me. Had does all around me after I shot my doe. Never had an exotic come out.

I ended up being the only hunter to kill anything on our hunt. A few guys missed axis and blackbuck and another guy missed a WT doe. I never saw an exotic.

Fun hunt, the weather cooperated and a great staff there.
