Re: August 15 hunts - 08/10/17 01:31 PM

I have to be honest that I have my fingers crossed on everyone of these upcoming draws. I went from winning 1 or 2 hunts a season to strike outs the last 2 years. I'd really like to get out to one of these new places that I have never seen.
Posted By: Blank

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/10/17 10:01 PM

Yes, changing the application process and allowing people to apply for every hunt in a category certainly decreased the odds of drawing. Some only 25% or so, but in some cases the number of applications for really desirable trophy hunts doubled or even quadrupled! That said, I still hope to be lucky every year, and continue to put in my chances and cross my fingers. Good luck to everyone and hope your dreams come true next week.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/11/17 01:55 AM

Ive got 10 trips to get lucky on coming up next week. I have been prepping all summer getting prepared for any hunt I might get picked on. I am ready . I think!!??

I just learned about these hunts a year or 2 ago so this was really my second season to apply. And last year I only signed up for 4 or 5 hunts total.

Couple of hunts I have coming up that would be dream hunts for me and that is javalina at black gap or the Chap. I want to go to Black gap just because I love the area and I could just sit in some canyon all day glassing and be happy. hammering a peccary with my 68 would be a bonus but I could care less if I score or not truthfully!

The chap would be awesome because I could care less about javalina and I would be pig hunting for sure. Coyotes pigs and peccaries. they will all die and it will give me the chance to scout for future hopeful deer drawings.

the others look mostly like meat hunts but it will be a good experience.

I am getting excited for sure!

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/11/17 03:32 AM

Good luck. To be honest, I have never seen as many javelina as there are on the Chap. Groups of 5-20 every time I have been there. Just like vacuum cleaners for any corn or bait you put out! They scared the crap out of my grandson with all their squealing and teeth popping, but he settled down and got a nice one.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/11/17 01:26 PM

They are mean little suckers! Sounds like they need to get rid of a lot of them.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/13/17 04:05 PM

Can youths apply for these hunts or do they have to apply in the youth section only? Trying to keep my kids in my group if we were lucky enough to get drawn
Posted By: Blank

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/13/17 04:29 PM

When you browse the hunts, in the lower left corner of the hunt info it will have age requirements. The only ones I remember that are adult only are the guided hunts that only have one tag, and it specifically says that. Because youth 8-16 have to be supervised, adults cant go along on that hunt.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/16/17 01:27 PM

Damn status is still: Application Received, which is still better than saying pending 2nd draw.

Still showing Application Received on mine too! I keep checking once an hour(or more). LOL

They are taking their time to make sure all the friends that paid them under the table get their hunts first.

Numbers of permits were way down this year. Starting to get tougher and tougher.

I hadn't even noticed that the numbers were down.

I was just looking and I thought it has been the last 2 years that I struck out but no, it has been 3 years. This will be year 4 if I don't get picked for a single hunt.

I'm showing pending second draw on one of the 4 I have in that draw today... violin

Still waiting on gun anterless.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/16/17 08:20 PM

I am showing pending 2nd draw on Chaparral Archery and Government Canyon Archery. This is my first year to apply so I don't even have any loyalty points. So my odds are already pretty darn low.

Will do. I'd be happy with any axis, Didn't expect to win anything. May have to hold off scheduling vacations until after second draw.

Got 3 more pending 2nd draw. If I win anything else have to figure out how to tell the wife I can't take a week off for the holidays

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/16/17 08:53 PM

YES SIR pulled anterless/spike!!! Looks like a meathunt. Man I hope there are some exotics and pigs but all I can remember from camping at Inks Lake is the hundreds of deer walking around in the campgrounds.

I camped at Inks Lake this March we just had. It is a beautiful place and you will enjoy it.

It has some interesting geology too if you are in to that sort of stuff.

I love me some GSP, the axis tend to always hang out in the brush as you drive into the rangers station in the evening.

0 for 7 for me.
Posted By: Rickybobby8

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/16/17 09:52 PM

Garner might be one of the lowest (20%)success rates. But that's 100% better chance on an axis than in Sam houston wma. And you can shoot one whitetail buck if one walks by.

Mine are all pending second draw. I have drawn twice on second draw in the past. Don't give up hope.

I pulled Richland Creek WMA. Never been there but damn sure looking forward to it.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/16/17 10:05 PM

In college while I was majoring in Geology we stayed there a few times. I just remember the deer herds around the camp itself. We didnt spend much time in the park. We would just camp there and drive around to different areas of interest geologically.

1 no select and still 13 pending 2nd draw. Usually how long before the 2nd draw is conducted?
Posted By: Bigfoot

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 12:28 AM

They give us 10 days to pay for this hunt we were selected for so I am assuming they will do it the day after they close the collection of money.
Posted By: Herbie Hancock

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 12:30 AM

10 days! I guess for those people who only check their email once a week......shoot if I won I'd pay within minutes of getting that email.
Posted By: Rickybobby8

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 12:39 AM

I paid within minutes. Not the best draw but might be the only time I get drawn this year. If I somehow get some "better" hunts and I can't make them all, I'll drop one with a stand by and post it on here.

Odds are though garner is my only one.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 12:55 AM

My single EXO and 4 remaining GDA entry's are all showing as pending 2nd Draw, as well the GDA Permit Win at Ft Boggy...sooo just maybe that you can win more than a single Hunt in a given category...who knows what I'll find out in the morning talking to the folks at Smith School Rd in Austin.

Choke Canyon Archery Deer. Yippee!!!!

A few others that show pending 2nd draw, but not worried that they will work out.

I get to come to Texas to fish in Oct., and to hunt in January. Doesn't get any better than that
Posted By: Bigfoot

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 01:49 AM

You should be here in late November through Xmas that is our best fishing month of the year by far. Congrats on choke canyon. Just dont choke!

Think your wrong about shooting a white tail buck. Bag Limit: unlimited axis deer: either sex limit one fork antlered buck. I'm pretty sure it means an axis buck, I know it was that way last year on the youth hunt.

Looks like you can win more than one in a category. I drew javelina at Mason Mountain and Big Bend Ranch. Also got an antlerless/spike at Copper Breaks. Looks like my year!
Posted By: Bigfoot

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 03:11 PM

Congrats on that Big Bend hunt. I am very jealous of that one!!!
Posted By: SherpaPhil

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 03:23 PM

Thanks, I am really excited about it. I think I will pass on Mason Mountain. I hunted Scimitar Oryx there last year and it is a great area with a nice bunkhouse, but it is the week after Big Bend and I don't think I can swing taking time off two weeks off in a row.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 04:06 PM

Anyone hunted the Aransas NWR before? General Deer...

I'm looking at what other hunts I should apply for... I'm eyeballing Ft. Boggy, Enchanted Rock, San Angelo, Las Palomas NWR and Aransas NWR.

Any info on any of these hunts if any of y'all have done these before...
Posted By: DHS274

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 06:11 PM

I went 0-9.
Two friends who applied together went 0-17, ouch. They hit all the exotics and bunch of whitetail hunts. I don't feel so bad.

ME and my crew went 0-4 but we've still got like 19 more for some of the september drawings.

Re: August 15 hunts - 08/17/17 10:32 PM

DHS don't feel bad about goin 0 for 9...theres a reason I have 18 LP's in EXO and 15 LP's in GDE...just sayin'...and don't forget hammering the StandBy circuit too, a PIA but it works when TPW allows it to used, now that it's has been re-instated.

Why you letting her go? I may take years if ever that you can daw it again.

I also drew a javelina tag at Big Bend Ranch for the week before, and I don't think I can take time off work two weeks in a row. I have been to Big Bend Ranch and hunted Mason Mountain before. Between the two, I definitely prefer Big Bend Ranch. Never expected to have the problem of too many permits!
