South Llano River SP - Youth

South Llano River SP - Youth - 09/15/15 10:50 PM

My son got drawn for the South Llano River State Park Youth Gun Deer Either sex for December 28-30. We are excited!

The hunt info says he can take Whitetail, Hogs, Axis, Aoudad, and Fallow deer. I don't know anything about this place but it doesn't look like it's high fence. I wouldn't think it is since its a state park...but unusual that it has all those exotics if its not. Does anybody know?

Also, has anybody ever hunted there? What can we expect as far as how the place is laid out and how likely is it to see whitetail and/or exotics. Anybody camped there?

Thanks!

My kids have never been drawn there but you hit the jackpot. Probably the best youth hunt in Texas. Last year 14 kids harvested 13 deer plus an additional 14 exotics. Almost a 200% success factor!!! Here's the links if you want to see for yourself.

Me and a buddy got drawn there in 2011 I believe. Killed 14 animals in 2 days. 6 WT and 8 Axis. Had 6 150 quart coolers full of meat! It was work but fun...

Thanks WT! Was that total from just you two or every hunter that was on the hunt? Either way it's good. If just yall two...wow!!

Just us 2...biologists were so happy they gave us a cooler to put extra meat in. The other hunters were a no show. If you have a travel trailer I believe you can stay in the park during the hunt. Hunt is by assigned blind and they were very nice blinds.I would suggest calling the biologists to get details to make your hunt more enjoyable. Good luck!

Never hunted it, did hunt the Walter Buck WMA adjacent and behind SLRSP on a GDA Hunt in '99. The entrance to the Park is 5 miles south of Junction & good grub several places in town, so it's an easy hunt and lots of critters of all kinds. Short'ish shots prolly 80 -100 yards tops & the Bio Guys will tell you to take all the non natives possible. Be sure to take a camera with a long lense.

Both SLRSP & Walter Buck are low fence. Don't pray for rain as the entry road is across a low water crossing of the South LLano River. Ony 5 blinds as I recall.

Looks like the only way I'll ever get drawn here is to adopt a "grandchild", as I've been putting for it for every Hunt available since 1999.
Have Fun & Make Plenty of Memories, cause you'll never draw this'un again.

My son was drawn for this youth hunt as well on Dec. 21-23. He is super excited to have a shot at an exotic. I will post how our trip went for those who hunt second youth hunt. Good luck!

Thanks Aghunt! Hope your son has a great hunt. I look forward to seeing how the hunt went. Also, if you find out any tips/info about the place between now and then...I would love to hear from you.
