Got picked for Archery Deer at Chaparral WMA.. wondering if I can use my crossbow.... ? never hunted there before. Anyone know how to hunt down there? maybe water, trails that cross fences or such? Congrats erok11! I was successful on a Black Gap Mule deer archery hunt in 2007.

My 11yo daughter was drawn for 3 youth gun antlerless/spike hunts at Gus Engling WMA, Fairfield Lake SP, and Muse WMA!!!

and we still have lots of chances at the either-sex youth hunts that haven't been drawn yet!

We were selected twice in javelina draw, after pending second draw last year.

I drew an archery tag for Gus Engeling today. Later than years past, I think - Dec 7-11. I've seen some monsters in pictures from there but hear it's hard hunting. Anyone else planning to go this year?

Gus Engeling is one of my favorites. It can be a hard hunt for some because there is no baiting, the deer are very spooky from being heavily hunted, and it's real thick. For a bowhunter that knows how to hunt without just staring at a pile of corn, it's not so bad. There are lots of straight, mature oaks that are great for climbing stands, so it shouldn't be a problem finding a good spot. Because it's so thick, your shots are going to be close, not a big deal for an archery hunt.
Most of the deer shot there are taken by the same hunters who have hunted the WMA many times before and have figured the place out. I have been fortunant enough to be able to take some meat home every time I've hunted there. Even if you don't score on a deer, there are quite a few hogs too.
The staff at the WMA are a great group of guys too. You are going to have a fun hunt, no matter the outcome!

Good luck!

I've hunted it 3 times all gun hunts, very few deer get brought into the check station, its a super tuff for deer out there the last couple years, chances of taking a hog are a little better.

Re: Drawing results - 08/27/15 03:34 PM

I thought baiting at Engeling is allowed? Though with no feeders anywhere I expect them to just stare at corn if it was spread out around my stand.

I stand corrected. When I last hunted there, a couple of years ago, there was no baiting. Looking at the hunt brochure though, it says they DO allow it now. Corn away!

Good luck! Post a lot of pics!

In his first using on draw hunts last year my buddy was 3 of 12. So this year he jumped on like 15 or 20, so far he is 0-11.
Do first year entries do better, to bring them back next year? Just curious as I have heard a lot of good stories from first year folks, not so much from the draw hunt veterans.

Pending second on Lake Brownwood, Dinosaur Valley, and Atlanta in gun antlerless. Maybe folks will get tags for the big guys and give 'em up.

Pending 2nd at Atlanta as well, plus Gene Howe and Matador. Haven't drawn the others yet.

Guess management and either sex will wait till a later date.

Josh and I enjoy gong to different places and seeing new sights. One day he won't want to go hunt with me, so until then it's a little father/son time. up

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 01:17 AM

I applied 14 preference points to 5 different gun deer antlerless hunts and still didn't draw a single hunt. I have one heck of a streak in that category. Oh well. Still a lot of drawings to go.
Posted By: A.B.

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 01:29 AM

We had 3 points for antlerless and got one. 4 points for management and got none. We have 2 for either sex and jury is still out.

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 03:04 AM

Looks like we struck out for GDA at Enchanted Rock and GDM at Kerr and still waiting GDE. Didn't mind not getting drawn there because we put in for low chance draw to get loyalty points due to our work schedules not matching up with any of the hunts. this year.
Posted By: Aggieduck

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 03:07 AM

GDM at The Chapp for me. 7 points or less but wider than 12" so might get a good cull. Can shoot a doe or spike as well. Yotes and Javi are on the hit list as well. Shot a nice deer at Richland Creek last year. Been a good run for me.

Preference points don't mean sh#t anymore, I HATE the new system...

It does seem like 1st time applicants get picked more... I'm watching my list keep shrinking and shrinking... frown It's kinda like they're selling drugs, you get the 1st hit to be reeled in, and then you get hooked and you pay more and more and more after that without the real high of being drawn...

I'm going with the kiddo's to Chaparral WMA for antlerless/spike on Nov 21/22.

Still waiting on other hunts to be revealed!

I entered 13 drawings this year and struck out.
3 of those were youth drawings for my son, so I guess he's out of luck this year too.

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 05:52 PM

Jhawkbear - If you haven't looked into it, check out the TYHP (Texas Youth Hunting Program) It is for kids under 17, the cost per hunt, if drawn is $150 and they have a high success rate. We did one last year, and had an absolute blast, and my son harvested his first two deer.

I have it set on my calendar to get him enrolled as soon as I can.

No you've been blessed, I had a friend last year who entered just about every area for the deer categories, he stacked up several hundred dollars in applications fees and didn't draw a single hunt, but he also had no loyalty points, could have spent that money on a nice guided hunt.
Posted By: NewJeep

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 06:27 PM

Since I already have places to deer hunt I usually put in for the areas that have the best chances at a trophy. So yeah I pick the harder draws to get.
Posted By: quickerNu

Re: Drawing results - 09/15/15 06:35 PM

Wow, I'll count my blessings! I do tend to apply for the "tougher" backpacking hunts, but that's what I enjoy. I spent maybe $30 in application fees.

"Entire Area; A hunt on this area will be a backpacking experience and it is suggested that only those with backpacking experience and in good physical condition participate.

There are no facilities on this side of the river. Hunters will need to use GPS devices to track their hunt location. Park radio will be provided for hunters to communicate with hunt personnel in emergency situations. Hunters will need to provide a canoe or flat-bottom boat to cross the river with all of their gear. Hunters will need to pack in all required food, water, camping and hunting supplies. Open fires are not allowed. "

Now that's hunting public land!

I sure can't complain about the system- in 3 years of entering, I drew nothing first year, got GDE Pedernales Falls last year, and this year drew GDA Hill country SNA and GDE Colorado Bend. I feel lucky, but also, I'm entering the backpack hunts that I think a bunch fewer people are entering, with lower success rates, but better odds of getting the hunt.

0 for 50, no joke, I put it all in this year and still drew a blank. Zero for fifty, did not imagine that it would go that bad. Decided I was all in for a draw hunt and if that failed it would be my last year trying. Well, that's that.

Re: Drawing results - 09/16/15 12:58 AM

0-50 this year, have lots of time off and figured this was a good year to go all in, no more of this. Your right, a waste of money. Try a 3-5 and if you get lucky great.
Posted By: DHS274

Re: Drawing results - 09/16/15 12:59 AM

hello, dustin wayne. i'm new to the forum. i was drawn for a whitetail/ either sex hunt nov 14th-18th. would you agree that most of the whitetail are around the river/low areas on the matador? i believe that compartments are actually chosen by groups, in the order their group was chosen. i'm trying to look over as much satellite photo stuff as i can, because i'm not familiar with the 28,000 acres at all. i would like to make the best "guess" of where i would like to hunt, as possible. any suggestions will be appreciated.
