What's your suggestion?

Hunting, target, Mil MOA preference?

Re: Scope for 7mm-08 - 03/21/21 01:52 AM
Mostly hunting, possibly some target. No preference. I'm sure the guy building it will have a preference when he works up loads for it.

Tell us about the rifle.
Nothing super fancy. Probably spending too much money on it. It's a M77 Hawkeye Varmint that is getting rebarreled to 7-08.

Please buy this.
I have it's cousin the ERS, and wouldn't part with it. I use the ERS every day. Same magnification, same controls, and it does everything I ask of it. It has shot competition and it does a great job hunting.

Pay attention on weight...no hunting rifle in the world needs a scope weight that starts with a 3 and I’d argue high 20’s isn’t worth it either.
Sub 1000 - Vortex LHT razor, vx5hd, vx3hd
Sub 500 - Burris fullfield E1, used Zeiss Conquest, I’ve had some luck with a vx1 but I don’t twist on turrets with it.

The reason I like a Primary Arms GLX scopes. They weigh under 24 ounces and are a good balance for hunting/ target. The run about $700..

The reason that scope of yours missed 800 last night was because it said Vortex on the side. No other reason it could have happened.

I thought it was shooter error

I'm a big fan of classic, non tactical looking scopes, with normal reticles. I don't turn dials or shoot long range. Hard to find a scope like that anymore it seems. Everyone has jumped on the long range wagon.
I like these for hunting although I have no experience with any of them lol. Just what I would and will buy as I get more rifles:
Zeiss -
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1022912356?pid=609438Swaro -
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1191291888Some Leupold VX-3i or VX-5HD with duplex reticles.
Burris -
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1022349618?pid=872757Edit: These are just the ones I have found in my price range that fit my criteria. If anyone knows of any other nice $500ish scopes with no turrets, duplex reticles, etc. let me know.
I like walnut rifles though.

In reality, since probably 95% of kills are under 250 yds, you could throw a Meopta meostar 3-10x on there, zero for 200 yds, and never touch the dials. Keep a sharp knife ready.

Re: Scope for 7mm-08 - 03/22/21 07:00 PM
As far as I know, all features are the same, but it looks like the DMR has illumination. My ERS does not.
ERS has the G-2 reticle. DMR has the G-3, which is only a small tweak to the G-2.
Really good scopes! Great glass, really smart reticle, and proper tracking turrets. In fact, I took my ERS off my competition rifle when I got the NF ATACR. Dialed in the same known DOPE into the ATACR, and nothing changed. We know NF tracks, that showed me once more the ERS also tracks. 1350 yards was my farthest shot with the ERS.

Mind Changed since they could not get it here fast enough. Went With Sightmark 3-18x50

That is way too practical.

The rifle he is about to have will be capable of well beyond 1000 yards. That scope is not.
I've had multiple Swarovski rifle scopes on my range. Good glass, that is all. Their turrets suck, their reticles suck. Probably Ok for a set and forget scope, but his 7mm-08 will be capable of so much more.
Swarovski does a terrific job on spotters and binoculars though.

For some reason you have this notion that every person that ever asks about a scope for a hunting rifle going to shoot 1000 yards.

I don't have this notion, because that is simply not true. But in this case, I know more about the O.P. and the situation than you do. And I know what the rifle will be able to do, and he is going to do that with it, on occasion.

I have this Burris, the Signature HD. For less than $500.00, great value and has proven itself to me to be a great hunting scope. It's held zero well after being carried over my back, shot a lot, rode on the front of my 4 wheeler. It's on a great rifle with good rings as well, but the scope is holding it's own very well. I also have the VX5HD, it's of course better, but more than 2x the $.

4 left
I'm sure they will be gone. I don't NEED a better scope. I want a better scope for my 22. I currently have to pay for the new floors that are being installed tomorrow before I get to spend any more money on toys.

I got mine in last week. Good scope but seems heavy. It does have the illuminated reticle but doesn't need it. Good luck finding "in stock" 34 mm rings though. Mine should be in next week.

You'll want the illumination if you're backed off to low mag and hunting in low light.

Gotcha - my brother has an ERS and uses it in that scenario. I'm just saying - that's really what it was designed for and it's useful there in my experience.
