Shim for more elevation?

Shim for more elevation? - 08/10/20 03:27 PM

Now that these .22lr's need to shoot to 300+ yards

The new Ruger 10/22 custom shop has a 30mm rail, pretty good idea

Question: If you have a 20mao integral rail, can you buy some copper shim stock and cut a small shim to fit between scope tube and rear lower half of rear ring?

How far can you take this?

how "thick" is 10 MOA piece of copper shim?

I have no clue. I bet you can go to a hobby shop and find thin copper sheet in various thickness. I'd probably get a couple thickness. .001, .005, .010, .025 etc.... You could cut it with some good scissors if it's not to thick. I did that once for a .22lr I had that I had trouble getting enough elevation to zero it.

Buzz, that there is some redneck engineering! But yes, you can. I have used a coke/beer can as a shim. If you cut it to size and drill holes, it will work. You can not punch the holes, as it will fold at the hole and create a high spot and make it uneven. You can punch them with a hole punch of same/similar size as your screws are though, as long as it cuts the hole smooth where the edges are flush. I forget the measurements, but it's about 25 to 30 moa increase. So make sure you have enough of internal adjustment.

I've used tape as a shim as well. Thin, water resistant, stays in place.

Chris actually just did this Buzz. You might want to give him a shout about how he did it.

Then mill it off the action.

After that, it doesn't even have to be drilled and tapped. TIG weld it on.

Well you could do that. I couldn’t do that, ain’t got the tools or know how. I’d just buy a different 22 receiver lol.

Message sent Buzz. No shims used (although I did try them for a bit), added the Burris XTR rings. I’m a little Leary about the plastic inserts possibly getting compacted and losing zero but so far so good.
