Sighting in question...

Sighting in question... - 04/12/20 04:00 AM

I have a rifle (7-08AI) that has a MIL scope on it. I just mounted the scope and after bore sighting it, I set up at 45 yards away to try to dial in, before moving to 100 yards to set my zero. I had thrown this scope on my buddies rifle previously and set the zero stop. Well, it started to rain and I didn’t have time to finish sighting in and ran out of travel since I had set the zero previously. hammer so I decided to end the range session.

Wanting to get it to zero at 100. So at 45 yards I am 10” high and 3” left of bullseye.

If I were to try to correct it to be dead center bullseye at 100, what would my adjustments be? Wanting to get it as close as possible before I hit the range next, to hurry this up so I can start getting DOPE out to 400.

I’m thinking I have to right answer, but figured this might be a fun test question to ask the THF.

1.9R

6.2 D

Maybe, night shift math. Also not accounting for scope offset, velocity, etc etc.

Quit messing with 45 yards, if you want it zeroed at 100.

Use the reticle like I showed you and measure where the POI is versus POA. Why are you speaking in inches, why? You have one of the best rulers in the world right in front of you. How many Mils left is it, how many Mils high is it? Dial the correction in the scope. Fire another shot.

But punching paper 50 yards for 100 yard zero, you should be .5 Mil high at 100 yards.

bang bang bang I didn’t know you had a mil reticle! Send you to school, buy you books, you eat the covers.

Jason - I figured I’d get a little beating from you for posting this! Lol! don’t worry - I set up my new trijicon 1-8 on my AR in minutes using the “ruler”, and I it was perfect. The 45 yards was a distance where there was a target set up for the AR...was trying to zero the AR at 50...only place to hang the target with a good backstop was at 45, so I went with that. I just took a couple shots with the 7-08 to see if it was on paper at the 45 yard target right after I dialed in the AR, and then the big storm blew in and I had to pack everything up, fast!

I just estimated the 10” high and 3” left of those two shots.

Just thought it would be a fun math/conversion problem to pose. I’m sure I can get it where I need it in 2-3 shots next time I’m out there, using the “correct way” smile

Side note:

Zero’d the AR to be at 50, and this was the impact at 100.

And at 200 (I felt like I pulled this one a tad):

But happy to get the AR close enough for some hog shooting next trip.

Why do math? Ain't nobody got time for that.

You see your bullet hole in Mils, you correct the POI in Mils. Next project?

edit: Also, the 100 yard zeroed rifle. Elevation correction for 200 yards is often .4 to .5 Mil UP.
Elevation correction for 50 yards is often .5 Mil UP.
So, the 50 yard zeroed rifle is also zeroed at 200 yards. In your case, you could apply a perfect 200 yard zero, then re-shoot at 100 yards and 50 yards, and see if you like that better.

This would get you about .5 low at 50 yards for a close 100 yard sight in. I came up with 2.2 right, but close enough for 100 yard initial sight in to fine tune from there.

Again, you should be using your reticle, if you have it. If you understand mils and how to use the reticle, you should be sighted in in 2 shots. (bore sight the rifle, shoot one round for impact, then measure using your reticle how far that round went from center cross hair and adjust. Follow up with second round to verification and you should be near center to fine tune in after the second shot). It's really that easy. If you're at 50 yards, your have a slight bore height to scope height difference to account for, known as sight off set. For most hunting rifles, that's about 1.5" to 2, or about .4 to .5 mils, for a low impact.

Well then George wasted $2700 on a scope and wasted a day with me, if he's thinking in inches.

Why even measure with the reticle.... just dial your aiming point to where the bullet hole is and your done.

I plan to use my reticle next time I’m at the range to dial in...kindly put the pitchforks down. Lol. I used my MIL reticle to get my AR sighted in 2-3 shots.

Just thought it would be interesting to pose the question kinda as a math problem. I was bored last night, what can I say?

Aim at target. Fire one round. Adjust Reticle to bullet hole. Move target to 100m. Now sight in.

IF! One can keep the rifle perfectly still.

Rarely is that the case.

1.0 Mil = 3.43 MOA

3.43 MOA = 1.0 Mil

There's some math for you. wink

Just remember your 'right' from your 'left.' Watched a guy waste a PILE of ammo at the range yesterday making "backwards" adjustments. He also reversed which turret changed which direction at one point.

I did this this week. Luckily I caught myself going the wrong way and was able to correct it before the shot.
