Anyone have any first hand knowledge of the Leupold LTO-Tracker compared to the FLIR Scout?

Getting the monocular for spotting, also looking at scopes. WIth an emphasis on resolution/distance over recording and other bells and whistles,
what thermal unit (scope) do you recommend that would be under 2 grand? Been on a few night time hog hunts with someone that has all the
toys for this and wanting to get my own.

Under 2, Pulsar RXQ30V. That's the only one I'd consider under 2000 personally. Downside is they're hard to come by.

There are a variety of FLIR Scout models. Which Scout did you mean?

The 160. I've used the 640 and Scion PTM, just not in the market for that much on a hand held right now.

I would strongly suggest you actually look through the LTO and TK160 before purchase. You have used decent thermal and your current choices are both bottom of the barrel and the difference will be significant. At 160 resolution, the TK 160 is 1/16th the resolution of the Scout 640. It looks like it should be 1/4 the resolution, but since you are dealing with a 2D grid, it is actually 1/16.

Thanks, appreciate the help here. Going again tonight for few hours. Most of our stalks were under 400 yards, some were actually walking up on pigs in deep grass and wheat while searching for what we had just shot. With you having experience in thermal vision, what unit would you get to start out (scope) that wouldn't be disappointing yet was not several grand? I don't really have a budget but want to keep it on the low end for now while thinking about long term optics.

There are no sub $2k thermal scopes, though there is a FLIR Breach Monocular in the classifieds right now for $1,750, good deal. You can buy a used ATN Thermal scope for under $2k, but there's a lot of that disappointment factor you mentioned.

Start with a Thermal Monocular and a NV scope (one of the Pulsar's are a good choice) and you'll have a nice starting setup.

Went on another hunt Saturday night, got to try out a Pulsar Quantium XD38 (think that is the model) hand held unit. Only done two night hunts but starting to think there is more value in longer range detection in the hand than the scope. Find them with the hand unit from considerable distances and then stalk up on them. WInd and rain had everything shut down but the deer for a while. Once it calmed down, around midnight, we got on three groups. Two of us shooting, lost count but think we got somewhere around 25 to 30 pigs. Two hunts and i'm hooked on this.

leupold lto-tracker HD is much better than standard one (320x240 vs 206x156). I have one and I think it's OK for a hand held.
And it's only $575 now.
