850nm to 940nm IR for Nightvision - 05/30/19 07:12 PM

Question for the Nightvision experts, I just acquired a Sightmark Signal 340RT Digital Night Vision Monocular, its the 940nm version. Can I use a 850nm illuminator with it to increase the range or will it only work with 940nm IR?

Its hard to say, often times trial and error is the best approach

Do you have a buddy with an ir-850 you can borrow ?

All digital night vision systems use a IR camera board and they can see 940nm and 850nm, The main difference in the camera boards are their resolution and low light LUX level. You will get more range with the 850nm. The 940 gives off less of a red glow and that is the only reason to use one, but you get less range. When you compare IR illuminators look at the emitter manufacturer (Oslon Black is best), wave length (850nm), the watt level of circuit board, and the objective lens size. We sell two that will really improve the quality of your system at digitalcrosshairs.net. Just not sure how you would mount them on a monocular.

850. See further. I like sniper hog lights personally.

I don't have a 850 illuminator but will purchase one. I do have a Photon RT that has one built in. I could use its illuminator as a test.

The 340RT has a short picatinny rail on either side of the unit. I'll just mount to it.

Update - I bought an Evolva T20 850 nm illuminator off Amazon. I attached it to the 340RT picatinny with an old 1" weaver style ring I had laying around. It works great, I compared it to my Photon 4.5 RT S and it seems to work at least as good as the Photon, maybe better. In fairness I was in my driveway looking at trees in a vacant lot across the street at about 125 yds away so not a real good test. The real test will come on my next night hunting trip. Interesting thing about the Evolva T20, they advertise the body is one inch diameter, its actually slightly smaller. I had to put a couple of wraps of electrical tape on it so the ring would hold it tightly.
