Leica 2000B in the fog/rain

Last evening I went out looking for coyotes. Didn’t call or see any, but plenty of deer were out in the miserable weather. It was late, light rain falling, and foggy/misty. I could see something out on the hay field, and assumed it was deer. It was, but how far off were they? Got the Leica RF out, and it ranged them easily at 360 yards, and when I overshot them with the RF, it read the tree line that I could hardly see at 511 yards. Really dim light, rain and fog. Pretty impressive RF.

That’s interesting you mention that. Traveling back from Sheep Show in Reno yesterday I visited with Leica’s trade show rep for over an hour. His name is John (got his card).

I knew Leica was out front years ago with bringing laser rangefinders to the hunting market, and that it was a few years before other companies came along. He said that’s because Leica has declined to sell/license their laser technology and the other companies had to develop their own. He said there are lots of good laser rangefinders now, but the biggest noticeable difference one will see between a Leica unit and all the others is performance in fog/mist.

Leica has always had the reputation as the best laser rangefinder. I had the old LRF unit and now use a 4-5 year old CRF 1600. I have a Sig 1250 also and want to compare them in fog/mist sometime.

Can't say I've had a bad experience with Leica, or even know of one. Too bad they don't make the types of rifle scopes I like.

I had the HDB, the 2000 yd model (403 IIRC?). When the temps dropped below 30* the farthest it would range was slightly over 300 yds, and in foggy conditions about 600 was it. I had Leica look it over then sent it down the road. I'm anxiously awaiting the Meopta made/Leupold branded model. FWIW, the Nikon Laserforce's laser was head and shoulders better than the Leica.
