factory rail or bases

I either need to get rings to clamp on the grooves built into the action of my Marlin 22mag or get bases for the rings I have. Is one mount method better than the other? I have it in my head that the fewer variables the better but what do I know.

Many people prefer to use bases on their rimfires, I prefer rings straight on the receiver in a rimfire.
