Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore

Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/04/18 11:08 PM

Alright y’all. I bought the rifle today and I am looking for a good scope for $5-600 for the new rifle. I had some good recommendations on a scope on my gun post but here is what I am looking for, mil, mil, and illuminated reticle, capable of 1000 yards of adjustment. I’m not very well versed on scopes like this so I want to make sure I buy the right one the first time around. I like the SS 3-9 but I want an illuminated reticle. The Burris XTR ii is also an option to, both recommended by FiremanJG, Ty. Also what is to much magnification on the low end, like is 6x too much? Any other help y’all might have in terms of suggestions or where to buy to save some cash would be greatly appreciated.

If you will be shooting out to 1000 I would definitely get more magnification and a 30mm tube. Not over 6x on the low end. 20 MOA rail will help get adjustment out to 1000 yards.

PST 2 3-15

Optically it is the best of the pst line and be above it’s class. Lot of really good reviews on this model

Mechanically they are better as well

I've made 5X on the bottom work for a very long time. I have two scopes with 5X low end. A close end shot is not all that difficult with a little practice.

The main feature I like of the Burris over the Viper PST is how tactile the turrets are, on the Burris. You have to really mean to turn the turrets on the Burris.

It’s going to be a tough go at that budget unless you find a really really good deal

SWFA - Black Friday sale next month , but the only illuminated version will be double your budget

Nightforce SHV - Still above your budget x2 most of the time

Vortex PST 2 - If you really shop you might be able to get a 3x15 around 6-800$

Burris XTR 2 probably same as above

Don’t rule out sfp if you’re just hunting imo.

I have been looking at a lot of scopes over the last few years

If you can find a Bushnell LRHSi 4x18x44 that GAP clearanced last month for $750 that would be your scope.

There are a lot of them on snipers hide for sale.

Midway cleared Gen1 PST 6-24 last week as low as $594. It’s solid and illuminated. Burris 4-20 can be found $750-850 if you shop around. I have a Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24 BTR Mil Mil on my 6.5 CTR that’s illuminated, saw one go for $600 on EBay last week.

Fireman got me to 800 yds with 10x and a .308.

I have a Burris XTR ii on my Tikka CTR. It makes for a nice setup.

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/05/18 11:35 AM

I have an SWFA HD 5-20 on my CTR. It's got better glass than anything listed on this thread IMHO, and in the same price range (for a used, non-illuminated). Only downside is the lack of illumination and zero stop. If those are deal-breakers, I'd personally get the PST2 3-15, but I don't fault anyone for getting the Burris either. They're each good at different things - Burris has better turrets and reticle and is built a little better, and the PST2 has better glass and really nice illumination control, but it's built quite as rugged.

Disclaimer: on the SWFA, the illuminated version only lights up a center dot and the adjustment range isn't particularly well done, so I don't think it makes sense to pay more for that feature on the SWFA. That's why I recommended the non-illuminated, which can be had for about $850 used. I tried out several cheaper and more expensive scopes and found that one to be the absolute sweet spot in terms of glass quality and build quality for the price.

Extra disclaimer: if you're going to be shooting decent sized targets out to 1,000, then the 3-15 range is fine. If you're going to try to hit small stuff, I'd consider going to something with at least 18x-20x on the high end. You can absolutely do it with 15x, but it's a bit easier with 20x or 25x.

PST 1 is not the scope to get. You would not be getting it right the first time

The PST 2 would probably be my pick after having one for awhile now

A $750 LRHS cannot be beat.

These scopes get crazy good reviews on snipers hide. I checked one out and wasn’t that crazy about it. I’d rather have a used SWFA or new PST2 in that price range, personally.

I think it is sometimes under-played how the same scope can look different to different people.

Make one more step up, with Bushnell, for another $250 and you get into arguably the best glass they have ever put in a rifle scope. The 3.5-21X ERS with G-2 reticle. But it does lack illumination.

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/05/18 06:53 PM

I picked up my CTR yesterday and put the GAP Bushnell 4.5-18 on it. Zeroed in 4 shots then walked it out to 800 yards with no misses. Very happy with that scope after my first range session with it. Love the rifle too.

If there are some for sale on snipershide, I’m going to look for another one of my rifles.

That's what I did, really liking the scope. Got a heck of a deal LNIB for $900 shipped/insured off Snipers Hide. Really need to get out to the range with it.

That's a great report back. What ammo, factory?

Burris xtr ii 4-20x50 Would be my pick. I used to have one with the G2B mil dot reticle and it never failed me at a match or while hunting. I still have a 3-15 on my 22-250 and its solid as well. The SCR reticle is great but for me using it for hunting it's too fine.

Agreed.

The SCR turned all the way down is a tad too fine for hunting, up close and/or low light. But turn it up for a distance shot, and one can hold to the tenth Mil very precisely.

Custom Reloads of Dallas, 140 Hornady ELD-M (6.5CM). Chad was there. Told me about what it should be speed-wise, entered that into my hornady ballistic app and went to town.

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/06/18 12:58 AM

Man you're in for some torment, because there are a lot of choices in the price range that are really pretty good. As long as you're okay with the FOV and mag range provided by the SHV, I dont think you could go wrong there. I've not looked through one, but the glass on these is supposed to be excellent and they've performed very well. If you are trying to stay at or less than $1k the Burris XTR2 would be another worth giving some thought. My suspicion though would be that the MOAR reticle may be better suited for hunting than the SCR. Another option is there seem to be some MOA versions of the vortex G2 PST's starting to surface. Check SportOptics and CamralandNY. If you're open to MIL/MIL your options expand even further.

Im actually in the same dilemma as you except Im running a .308 CTR and I want Mil/mil.

Best of luck with your decision.

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/06/18 02:00 AM

Like most here I think if you’re looking to spend $5-600 on a scope you’re just slightly under the market where the really good scopes come in. In the long run I would say you’ll be happier saving a little while longer and shop in the $8-1000 range. Yes it’s a lot of money but a used SS 5-20 will blow away anything you can find in the $5-6 range. And no, if you said a $1000 I would say save $1500. It’s not necessary to get where you’re going. Plus the SS 5-20 like all their scopes has a lifetime warranty but I never hear of many people having to use it. Vortex has the same warranty but not the quality reputation on their scopes in that price range.

I do love the SCR reticle.

Just to throw out another option, you may want to consider buying a scope for hunting and a separate scope for target shooting out to a 1,000 yards. Trying to find one with all the features you want for $500-$600 will leave you with compromises. SWFA black Friday sale in coming up and you will be able to pick up a SWFA 10X, 12X or 16X fixed scope for $250 with free pica tinny rings. Pica tinny rail will make it super easy to change scopes depending on whether you are going hunting or long range shooting.

Ok, so last night I bought the Burris XTRii 4X20X50 with the illuminated G2B mil dot reticle. Any suggestions on rings? I have a net of Vortex high mount rings in my safe, you think those would worK?

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/08/18 03:34 PM

I used Seekins low 1.0 inch rings on my XTRII 5-25 and it was just the right height. I think high rings will be way too high.

Re: Scope for Tika CTR 6.5 credmore - 10/08/18 03:53 PM

My 6-24x50 Bushnell ET sits pretty close in .97" Seekins rings on my CTR with factory rail, and the sight picture is just about perfect. Pic is a little angled but the gap is around .1" or so. .92" would work but another shorter was out.

Good call on the scope.

I use more Badger Ordnance rings than anything. Medium height. But I also install a Triad Tactical stock pack on every rifle, as well. Makes for a comfortable and proper cheek weld and sight height.
