New Scope question - 06/11/18 12:45 PM

Just bought a new scope. Have always bought Nikon (low end) or whatever came on the rifle. I just bought a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 Rifle Scope EBR-1 MOA PST-624S1-A. Is it up to their reputation here or elsewhere?

The Viper is a good scope for its price point. Compared to what you’re used to I think you will be very pleased.

They're Chinese, if that matters.

I does matter to a degree, but I didn't know they were Chinese. Thought they were made here. I was looking at Steiners and others that were quite a bit beyond my budget. I'm pretty sure this is not the second generation scope.

Everything except a few of the Razor's are Chinese nowadays. Even the Razor HD binocs are now Chinese.

Not the rifle scopes.

Riflescopes:
Crossfires are made in China.
However the Diamondbacks and the Vipers are made in the Philippines.
The Razors are made in Japan.

Binoculars, Rangefinders, and Spotters are a different story.
All Rangefinders are made in China.
Nearly all of the binoculars are made in China.
Spotters are nearly all China, but the Razor says Assembled in the USA.

Unless something as changed in the last two years, Skylar is correct.

Amg isn't 100% anymore. Reticle was recently outsourced. Still more than most though.

That's almost right. Initially speaking you're right, but then they outsourced the reticle. The AMG's reticles are from Germany now.

As far as US manufacturing goes, you're are absolutely right. There are not many at all with exception of maybe two.
Part of that is attributed to the buying public, everyone wants a deal, meanwhile manufactures have to make profit somewhere...so they will outsource to countries who offer labor cost that makes the deal happen and competitive enough for retails to sell the product in the US.

Interesting stuff, but I hope it lives up to what appears to be the opinion of a rather large fan club that posts in this category. If it works well and the reticle is accurate I really don't care too much where it's made. Even China, but I don't care for the idea of supporting a potential enemy of this country.

I say China like that cuz we end up with all sorts of stuff hecho en Chinafrom WalMart.

Skylar is right. If there was no demand for this Chicom crap, it would be a non-issue. China will suck the life out of any and everything, including their own people. Screw 'em.

So what is US made and worth a chit at that pricepoint.

PST is made in the Philippines. Depending on what you paid, they're decent. Not a great value in today's market at original MSRP, but they're decent at today's used prices.

Nothing. I usually look for hecho en Japan when it comes to value and quality in optics.

Yeah I don't know of anything US made at that price point.

Japan, Germany, Austria, Canada are where the best of the best optics are made. I don't know where Zero Compromise is making their new scopes, but you might add their manufacturing location to the list if they're as good as they say they are.
