In that case, get a Nightforce.

I don't think that's a dial scope. You'll probably want to dial if you're planning to shoot long. I like Nightforce or the Vortex Gen2 Razor.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/23/18 09:03 PM

Tangent Theta
S&B
Vortex Gen 2 Razor

In order of decreasing price.

I'd avoid Swaro if your goal is to shoot distance.

Why no Kahles? I have heard good things about them. I hope they are true because I plan on ordering one in a couple weeks.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/23/18 09:58 PM

I would do Atacr over vortex due to weight of vortex

Khales should be on the list

Zco is a new one that looks good

4-16 Atacr is tested and good. At low 2 that gives money for ammo, bipod, training etc

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/23/18 09:59 PM

I'm a huge Nightforce fan and have 6 of them, so I gotta lead first with them. The NXS series or the newer ATACR are great scopes. The S&B scopes are great. I know several shooters sponsored by Kahles, and I have used there scopes a few times and liked them. I'm not a US Optics fan. The Swaro hunting model scopes I would not use for dialing, as I have broken 2 of them. Their new tactical line I'm not sure of.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/23/18 10:38 PM

I'm a long time NF fan, they are great but have moved away from them since trying Steiner and using a buddy's IOR Valada (don't recall model). the Steiners mx5i and tx5i are really impressive as is the IOR. Especially the mx5i! I also really like the leupy mark 6 with TMR 3-18, but feel it's overpriced. Been behind and used top tier razors and thought they were competitive in that price point. Also don't discount S&B PM scopes they are very nice, but my eyes can't justify the price tag compared to a used in great condition Steiner tx5i. Heard great things about tangent theta.

Just remember Glass is so subject. you need to go out and get behind em for yourself. For example, one of the very best FFP bangs for your buck is the weaver tactical with emdr reticle. I have two and they are usually on sale at Natchez for $599 but everywhere else 1100-1200. They remind me so much of the NF SHV FFP (imo better) and bushnell lrs/elr glass it's not even funny at half the price, plus built like a sledge hammer.

The SS 5-20 HD is what I recommend to almost everyone. I walked into SWFA to buy the kahles 624i. I left with the 5-20 SS. Coming in at half the price of the kahles and performing flawlessly I don’t regret the decision. I may yet own the Kahles, or another SS or two. IF I decide to actually spend the money in the 3k range it will be a Kahles.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/24/18 12:37 AM

S&B
March
IOR Valdada
Kahles
Nightforce
Athlon Cronus
Vortex Razor,and a few others.

I bought the IOR Valdada Recon, but I shoot LH and it and the Kahles are the only LH friendly scopes when it comes to side focus adjustment.

what are you rifles specs. action, barrel, stock, trigger, etc. I'm worried when any builder starts with a Vortex optic.

Nothing at all wrong with Kahles from what I've heard.

Minox needs to be mentioned in that budget range.

Imo I would find a reticle you like then look at the glass first hand if possible. Swfa used to let guys take glass outside to compare which is more ideal.

I like the color, but they are like a brick.

The AMG allegedly addresses the weight issue, but I haven't seen one in person.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/24/18 06:08 PM

Amg has a super tight eyebox. Reticle is nice though.

Razor or vortex in general is very broad in qc. I've been squaded with 3 in one squad and none were of the same quality. Something else the gen2 doesn't handle as well as the germans is targets in shadows or mirage. That being said they do well enough they offer a great bang for buck.

I like the color and the extra weight. It's easier to stay behind my rifle and watch my hits since I got the Gen2. I like everything about that scope.

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/24/18 11:16 PM

not disappeared, had to work, very much appreciate the advice.
i am new to wanting to hit targets at 500+ yards
I hunt alot and comfortable shooting to 300 yards
I can set up 500-1000 yard range at ranch and feel it would only help my hunting
builder likes razor 2 for beginner cause of bang for buck i imagine
i will research scopes mentioned and, again, appreciate everything

$3000 is allot to pay for a scope, what's it going on? Rifle specs?
Posted By: Brother in-law

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/25/18 01:16 AM

What are the specs on your rifle?

Is your builder a vortex dealer?
Posted By: RedSnake

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/25/18 01:17 AM

To hit 500-1000 consistently, don’t overlook the importance of quality ammo. I suggest getting custom handloads — give Chad at Dallasreloads.com a call

Re: scope for custom 6.5 creedmoor - 02/25/18 11:29 PM

I will find out specs, if I was to say, hypothetically, that I went to builder I know and trust and asked for a quality custom rifle to learn and play with for longer distance for me......I would probably get hammered here for not knowing all details....so I wont say that lol.
Mainly interested in 500 range with factory ammo to start with. I said I am new to this area of shooting. I hunt a lot with shots out to 300 but this area is new to me.

That’s understandable. You pay him to know those things.

I would look at scopes and pick a reticle you like. Most of scopes mentioned are good scopes and it’s going to be hard to say one is categorically better.

With that being said at 2k you can get either the atacr or vortex razor gen 2/amg, can’t go wrong with either of those. I am in the same boat and leaning towards atacr because it looks rugged as hell.

With the money you are investing in a build and scope, you are cheating yourself if not going with custom ammo. Another nod to Chad at Dallas Custom Reloads.

NF ATACR Mil-C reticle.

That scope began the day at 800 yards today. I checked zero on it two weeks ago.
It does what it is supposed to do every time out, and that is after 20 times from truck to range, to truck, to safe.

Factory 6.5 creed is decent enough unless your planning on a br match.

Badger Ordnance, EGW 20 MOA pic rail, low strength Locktite, all screws torqued to spec, or 5 in/lbs tighter.
