Burris xtr 2 - 11/28/17 03:27 AM

Placed a order tonight.. Picked up a Burris 5-25x50 xtr 2 wondering if I should have gotten the 4-20x50. What's everyone running on 22-250 the 5-25 was 50.00 cheaper

Re: Burris xtr 2 - 11/28/17 04:08 AM

I did a bunch of research on this unit before buying a 5-25 PST Gen 2 and eventually swapping it out for an SWFA 5-20 HD. What I found out from some users and a well-known optics expert is that the XTR II 3-15 and 4-20 models are the sweet spots in the XTR II lineup. A significant number of folks who look through the 3-15 and 4-20 have very high opinions of the scope, and the opposite seems to be true for those who have the 5-25.

I looked through a 5-25 and 3-15 and was shocked and the difference. 3-15 was awesome, 5-25 was really awful in comparison.

I'd really consider looking at the 4-20, which is reported to be just about as good as the 3-15. If you have an SWFA 5-20, I think you might be disappointed in the 5-25 XTR II.

Now that being said, maybe the 5-25 I've looked through was a bad one or just didn't suit my eyes or whatever. But that unit in particular has very, very mixed opinions on glass. Some folks love it and some folks hate it. Hopefully you're in the former group.

Disclaimer - this is only my opinion and I am no optics expert. I just went through the process of comparing a bunch of options in this price range recently, including the XTR II 5-25. I wish I had got to lay hands on a 4-20 for comparison. But I can say with confidence that you will rarely find a bad review of the 4-20 or 3-15. The same cannot be said for the 5-25, at least as far as my research and personal experimentation was concerned.

I really like my 3-15x XTR II, especially considering what I paid for it. Mounted in a Badger unimount and it sits on my 6.5 creed AR most of the time.

Complaints with the vortex genII? why the quick change to SWFA?

Two small issues - one was specific to the combination of my eyesight and the particular scope I got and the other was an elevation turret that got pretty stiff through 1/4 of the travel each time around. I still think the Gen 2 PST is the best bang for $1k out there, by far. Great glass, Razor zero stop, great reticle, well-executed illumination, forgiving eyebox, etc. But the one I had just wasn't for me.

I got a great deal on the SWFA HD, so I swapped it out. But I think the PST Gen 2 is going to be the top selling scope under $1500 for a long time. There just isn't anything they missed on it. The only downside is that it's made in the Philippines and most of the $1k+ scopes are made in Japan/Germany/USA/Canada/etc. and are at a differently quality level.

I haven't look thru the PST II but the Burris XTR II 4-20 blew the first PST out of the water in every single aspect. There was absolutely zero competition between the 2. They had to of improved every aspect of the PST for it to compete w/the XTR II.

You should go check out a PST II - they really did upgrade nearly every aspect of it from the Gen 1.

The 3-15 PST Gen 2 and 3-15 & 4-20 XTR II are all fantastic scopes. The 3-15 PST Gen 1 is a definite step behind of them. In the 5-25 range, the PST Gen 2 is a definite step ahead of the XTR II IMHO.

As long as the PST turrets can be dialed with one finger, I'll never own another one. The turrets on the Burris, you gotta grab like a man, and mean to turn it, that's way better.

I forgot to mention this too.

I actually liked the turrets on my PST 2 a lot - really good positive clicks. But folks that are going to use it out in the field a bunch could definitely find them too easy to turn. This opinion seems to be fairly prevalent on snipers hide. They are a bit easier to turn than on my SWFA or on the XTR II.

My opinion on the PST 2 is primarily as a bench/prone shooter at the range who wants the best combination of features, glass quality, and price. The next time I accidentally turn a turret will be the first time, so that wasn't a major factor for me.

Re: Burris xtr 2 - 11/28/17 07:14 PM

I have a vortex viper long range I think is what they called it. Suppose to be the same as the pst, but no illumination and a capped windage turret. The elevation turret (same as viper gen 1) is not easy to turn at all, positive clicks and definitely not a one finger adjustment. I don't crank on it like crazy, maybe they loosen up with more extreme use.

Nope, brand new PST I would turn too easily. I know of several animals missed, and pieces of steel missed because of it. Matt (East) had 3.0 Mils of wind on his when he was running a stage, and didn't know it. I was 30' away and said "Check your turrets!" He fixed the windage and got a few hits. I knew his rifle shot well, and I also knew that trait of a Viper PST.

The pst 1 sucks compared to the 2 and xtr. I prefer the vortex reticles and 30 mm tube instead of the Burris 34. The viper or pst1 looks like ca ca compared to the newer versions

30mm tube is nice. And I apologize in advance to Gen 1 PST users, but the Gen 2 is a really significant upgrade in terms of optics. The glass quality in the PST Gen 2 is really quite good.

Well if I hate the xtr I got a great deal and won't have a issue getting my money back out. Only paid 808.00 for the 5-25

I bought a SWFA 3-15 even though Jason said it's like looking through a dirty window. I got it yesterday but I haven't been home during daylight to check out the optic quality.

LOL. I knew that would get your attention. It was on sale. I need to make it to your range once my dad gets out if rehab in about 30 days. It's going on a Savage 10 GRS in 308. I need to work up some accurate loads with 155 TMKs before I even attempt to become a long range guy.

Figures, I have mostly double base powder (H335, IMR 8208 XBR, TAC). Works good enough for hunting but I know long range shooting is much different.

I turned it down too, and that was to improve clarity.
