Scope ring advice

Scope ring advice - 11/26/17 12:36 AM

Is there any particular scope rings that you guys like to use, I have used Leopold rings in the past and they hold just fine, just looking for opinions on other options for my next gun.

I have/am using Leopold, DNZ one piece, Burris XTR and Talley tactical. Talley gets my vote, although I’ve never had an issue with any of them.

I will reach for Burris Signature's first. Love the posi-lok inserts.

Talley Tactical is my favorite.

I like American rifle company rings, Seekins, NF

I have Seekins on my burris and would buy them again.

Depends on the application. I wouldn't put them on a 338, but I've been using SWFA tactical rings on my 223 and 6.5 with zero issues. They cost like $30.

Been very happy with my tps rings

Re: Scope ring advice - 11/26/17 04:47 AM

I've used every ring mentioned thus far, save the ARC brand, and have had no real issues with any of them, though I will never use Leupold DD or those gawd-awful rear windage adjustable garbage again.
My go-to are Seekins if I'm using a 1913 rail which is my preferred set up. Have been using them for as long as Glen has been making them. Think I have 10 pair in service now with a couple sets in the drawer. Always have spares for when I get a wild hair and grab a new scope I dont need.
Occasionally I'll use Talley lightweights on sporter weight rifles if trying to keep weight to a minimum.

Looks like the seekins are on backorder for the 1in that I would need, I’m going to try the Talley lightweights.

Re: Scope ring advice - 11/27/17 01:29 AM

For me it varies with the rifle. A nice blued and walnut sporter gets Dual Dovetails or Zee rings with Warne steel bases. An Ar15 gets a QD type ring if I intend to run multiple optics, and I don't care what they look like. If I was shooting a .30-378 or some moderately powered rifle with a really heavy scope I'd be looking at the kinds of rings the LR guys like. I'll do anything to avoid having to use any setup with a windage-adjustable rear mount---those are total pieces of crap.

When someone has a bad shooting rifle, if it's wearing those, that's the first thing I point to.

You don't like the ARCs ? Or haven't tried them

Re: Scope ring advice - 11/30/17 02:35 PM

Stopped using Leo DD's & moved away from the old windage adjustable Leo's loooong time ago, and moved almost everything into Warne Maxima's, except a set of steel Burris tipoff's on a 70's Marlin BA rimfire, a set of period Weaver steel on a 70's era Marlin 39D, and a set of Talley Lwt's on a T3 6.5Swede Superlite.

** If anyone is still using the Tikka Factory rings, and is skeptical of the factory ring cap screws holding ft lbs of torque, lemme know...I went thru that with my 1st T3 and solved the problem with some steel screws...and got a few left over.

I use Badger and Ken Farrell rings and like both a lot. No issues. Badger unmount always returns to zero if torqued the same.

I have some leupold rings with the windage screws that i want to change after hunting season.

Haven't tried them so can't opine on them.

What is your objection to Dual Dovetails?

Re: Scope ring advice - 12/03/17 03:33 PM

Because Burris signature is better for an entry level mounting system.

Re: Scope ring advice - 12/07/17 01:03 AM

For 1" & 30 mm tubes,I always use Burris Signature Zee rings, they have always held tight and leave no ring marks on the scope tubes - plus you don't lap the rings!
On my 34 mm & 40 mm tube scopes,I use the ARC M10 rings. Best damn rings made,IMO. Just kinda pricey!

Re: Scope ring advice - 12/07/17 02:29 AM

I've used some Zee Signatures myself, and there's not much better IMO when you have an alignment problem. I've used plenty of plain Zees and have no complaints against them either. I have found Leupold Dual Dovetails to be more than acceptable---very strong and most aesthetically pleasing. Leupold QRWs have served me well on one particular rifle that must have the scope removed to take the barreled action out of the stock. Common theme would be they're made of steel and none are on windage-adjustable (a.k.a. JUNK) mounts.

The only steel ring I've ever seen fail was a Millet ring.

When I use Zee rings, I always try to find a mount made of steel. The only time I can recall settling for aluminum Weaver-style mounts was for my 788.

Ended up exchanging my 1in scope for a 4-14x30x50 Nighforce anyone know which height Talley’s I would need?

Re: Scope ring advice - 12/16/17 12:31 AM

Ordered the Seekins med-high with a Nightforce Rail base, hopefully that works.

Been very pleased with TPS rings. Got them from swag and they have been rock solid on multiple guns.

Re: Scope ring advice - 01/09/18 09:26 PM

I have Conetrol rings on some of my "pretty" rifles that are blue and nice wood. Those things are really slick and low profile. Never had a problem with them ever! But it takes about 7 hands to mount your scope with them.

On my larger calibers and any with 1913 rail, I have started using the Leopold Mark 4 rings with good luck and service so far. Cheaper than the NF but seem to really hold up well. I just mounted a new XTR to a 338 Lapua and will see how they do.
