Raytheon W1000-9 Questions

I recently got a Raytheon W1000-9 to play around with when I'm not deer hunting. First I will admit I don't know much about Night Vision at all. I have taken it out a few times overall I'm happy with it just have a few questions. my one complaint is after looking through it for hours my eyes get tired. It has a video out plug. Does anyone have any suggestions on any viewers or ways to hook it up to a I pad or lap top? I don't need to record anything just would like a screen to use to see what the camera is seeing. I hope that makes sense again I hardly know what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance for your time.

First of all, it isn't night vision, but thermal. That is state of the art 2004 miliary thermal technology, IIRC. You should be able to reduce eye strain by proper adjustment of the brightness, contrast, and focus adjustments.

Since it has a video out, you can hook it up to a lot of thinks such as any of the small DVD players that have a VIDEO In jack. You just need to get a cable to go between the two.

The W1000 is old and bulky and goes through battery like crazy. There are much better commercial thermals at or near what the W1000 goes for. Eye strain is a common issue with most night sights. Like DNS said, you can reduce it some with brightness and focus, but some folks are just more sensitive to it. You can hook battery powered lcd screens or mini dvr's to the video out.

Sorry for delay and thanks for the response. I appreciate the education I wouldn't have purchased it but a buddy sold it to me for $1500. I thought it was a good deal.

I agree it's big and bulky that's why I would like to change my set up. I usually hunt out of my bad boy buggy with and move around the ranch. I want to be able to sit in the stand for long sits through the night. Set the scope on tripod (in stand) hook it up to a portable screen using a analog cord. I have seen products on the market but they all are meant for recording which I don't really need. My question is when you hook up a device does it show what the scope is seeing realtime or does it just record to play back later?

I would just test some things but I left the thermal down at the ranch . Was debating going tomorrow but didn't want to take something that wouldn't solve my problem. Rookie move I know!

$1500? I would say you scored well. Two years ago, that scope still sold for $8000. The last time I saw them for sale, new, was early this year for $3800. Originally, they were in the neighborhood of $40K per unit. You can run it more cheaply on rechargeable 9v batteries if the battery expense gets to be too much.

The downsides to the unit are the size, weight, and batteries. The Resolution is 320x240, or what is basically low end now compared to the 640 resolution units, but still quite functional and that huge lens really helps the image. Will work great for hunting hogs.

The upsides are that the scope is military grade, very simple to operate, simple to operate even with mittens on, and will certainly handle normal hunting distances (<200 yards) with NO PROBLEM and will work beyond that. You are only limited by the magnification which I believe is a fixed 3x optical magnification with no zoom. It is rated for .308 and continuously NUCs the image so that the image is always the best possible that it can be.

FYI, I am told the Germanium in that lens may scrap out for over $1000 alone. If you do something that breaks the lens, don't breath the dust, but collect all of it. It is quite valuable.

You can hook a portable LCD screen into it for viewing. They have 12 volt models that you could power from a feeder battery. Just be aware that doing this puts out a lot of light that could possibly affect your hunting. Where are you located?
