Vortex Crossfire II or Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40? - 09/21/14 11:09 PM

Looking for opinions on which scope to buy. These both fit my price range. Will mount on a Winchester 270. Will be deer hunting out to 300 yards but viewing out to 600 yards. Thanks in advance.

I am super disappointed with my Vortex Crossfire II's eye relief / sight picture. It has a very small sweet spot even at lower magnifications and I find it hard to get a full and clear edge to edge image.

I have used the PROSTAFF 4-12 BDC Reticle many times and my son's T/C .308 wears that scope. I do some freelance PR work for Nikon and I have probably put over 1000 rounds under this scope with no issues at all. I prefer the BDC as it allows me to dial in my rifle, scope and ammo for the greatest longrange accuracy. Very easy to use as well. In case you didn't know, this scope is currently on sale through Nikon's Authorized Dealers so check out some of this site's Sponsors to see if you cansave some $. The PROSTAFF 5 is also included in this sale as well which is the next step up.
Drop me a note if you have any Nikon optic's question's.

I was disappointed with the eye relief and sight picture on the vortex as well. The nikon seemed brighter and clearer to me as well. You should be able to find a store that has both and see for yourself. I just bought a prostaff 4x12x40 and am very pleased.

I have a prostaff 5 3.5-14X40 BDC,on my 30-06, dialed in very easy, good eye relief. The furthest point I had an opening to see was at 400 yrds and it has a clear sight picture at that range. I know I would feel comfortable at 300 yrds using this scope. Plus if you know what grain/manufacture bullet you're using Nikon does have the BDC program on their website to help you set up the scope and estimated drop at certain yard ranges. Nikon Spot On

Interesting because I actually like my Crossfires (3) better than my Prostaffs (3).

I have a Vortex Diamondback that I really like but it is a much better scope than the Crossfire II in my opinion.

I find it best to compare scopes within a company's product line to establish the performance gaps and then cross compare from there to see where the value (best bang for buck) is.

Are you relying on the Crossfire for long distance (300 yards) shooting or mostly close in type hunting?

I would get the Vortex Diamondback, not much more money than the crossfire and a lot more scope.

Mostly 50-150 yard water bottle killing. The Crossfire to me is a better nighttime hog hunting scope when paired with an Elusive Technologies Kill Light 250. They seem to be brighter and more clear with the green light. Now for fairness, both Nikons are 40MM objective lens scopes and the Crossfires are 50MM lenses. But for me, I like the Crossfires better overall. Nothing scientific, just personal choice.

Right there with ya. I currently have a 1-4x24 Crossfire II with the V-brite reticle and love it as does my son. Getting one of Vortex's new Crossfire II 3-12x56 "Hog Hunters" in today. Wanted a decent scope that sucks in that early morning and late evening light for pigs. Also ya can't beat Vortex's warranty IMO. smile

I would buy the Nikon. Good eye relief and most nikons are clear and tough. I have had some mixed results with vortex. I had a viper that would not track and a diamondback that was fuzzy around the edges..vortex did take care of the viper, and I traded the diamondback with a gun..I have 3 razors (5x20s) the one I have mounted Iam very happy with...so that being said..for the budget you set forth...the Nikon is the better scope.

The Crossfire is made in China. All other Vortex scopes are made in the Phillipines or Japan. I generally like Vortex scopes better than Nikon with the exception of the Crossfire.

Hit the nail on the head. I'm wanting to trade my Crossfire for a Nikon if someone is interested.
