School gun safety Classes?

This is just an idea. If someone has never shot a firearm and then guns are outlawed, they probably don't care BUT have someone shoot a firearm and then tell them they can't do it any more- a lot more resistance People don't like to be told they can't do something they have previously done. So, given gun accidents, etc. why not have a high school gun safety class required by all students. A few hours in a classroom- explaining how a gun safety works, how to check to see if a gun is loaded, etc.- and then out to a local range, everyone fires a rifle, a handgun, and a shotgun..

I taught my kids at home alot of people don't.

NRA had a neat training film we got from them to teach kids about gun safety back in the late ‘90’s. It was in VHS format at the time. It was Ian cartoon style featuring Eddie the Eagle. Worked well with my son.

Can you imagine the uproar from Karen’s on this? Plus, guaranteed someone gets shot.

They had Gun safety and snake safety at the Graham elementary on the same day every year.

Here's my take. Most gun accidents with kids are from curiosity. They are curious about the gun, so they go find it and play with it. From very early on, I have told my boy that curiosity about guns can be dangerous in that facet, and that I was going to remove the curiosity. He can handle or shoot any gun that he wants as long as he asks me. So any time he say's, "Hey Dad, I wanna look at such and such gun", the answer is always yes. Bonus - he knows how to properly clear the chamber on a variety of different firearms.

Same philosophy goes for the girls, they just don't have the same curiosity.

That's how my friends and I grew up. Our parents didn't need childproof safes because they had taken the time to train us and remove the mystery attached to firearms. Guns just weren't a big deal to us. I raised my sons the same way.

Exactly. As a parent of two teenagers, I can tell you the kids today are idiots and you can be guaranteed one of the dumb A’s would shoot someone just to see what happens.

Already happening in 4H with Jr High kids.

In Austin of all places in the late 70's, we earned our hunter ed certificate during class in the school gym shooting bb guns. No kids shot anyone.

My idea was Mom and Dad are tree huggers but junior is in school and they have a class with a day's lecture on how to handle firearms, how accidents occur, etc. Then the school bus heads out to a range. Junior shoots a handgun, rifle, shotgun. He neither likes it or dislikes it. 20 years later someone wants to outlaw firearms. If junior fired some guns and thought it was "okay" then junior MAY be less inclined to support gun laws than if he had never fired any gun. That's just a thought I had. I may be wrong.

I grew up in California and my high school had a gun club. You left your rifle in your vehicle until after school and we set targets against a high berm to shoot after school. The Industrial Arts "Shop" teacher was in charge. I never saw anything even close to an accident because we had all grown up with guns at home.It was a great opportunity to shoot each others rifles.

I'd guess that the majority of fear or hate of guns is born of ignorance. Mass education as suggested by the OP would definitely be a big help to future generations.

My daughter got to take an Outdoor Learning class a few years ago in middle school. Part of the curriculum was the TPWD hunter safety course. It was an elective, and they only took like 50 students a year.
