Open carry sightings

Open carry sightings - 06/01/15 01:24 AM

I had a booth today at Trader Village. About 8 AM a man came walking up with a chrome/nickel large bore single action revolver, stuck into the front pocket of his pants. When I commented 'nice gun', he pulled it out, said 'yeah', and repocketed it. Exposed from the trigger back. Then he went wandering off into the crowd. And definitely not black powder, loading gate clearly visible.
Second was another man who I saw about 50' away with a nicely holstered semi auto. Tastefully done, but early.
I did not see any more after that, I guess the police shut the idea down.

They only read part of the story. Bet quite a few will get educated before it goes into effect. LOL.

I haven't seen anyone, but have had several people ask me why I'm not carrying open. It's clear people think you can alredy open carry.

Not that it will be any more dangerous but folks will be getting tagged for violations for a while.

It's like the day after Obamacare passed. A woman weent to the Doctor to have a mole removed and was shocked when they wouldn't treat her for free.

I wouldn't carry open, you're just putting a target on your back. Lets say you're in the local 7-eleven checking out, some one walks in to rob the place, they see you and your side arm, now you're their focus. All eyes are going on you cause everyone knows your have a gun. They may just shoot you, knock you out or who knows what. I like concealed, gives that element of surprise.

You could also make yourself a target by appearing defenseless.

Mmmmm, nope. You are just going to prevent that 7-eleven from being robbed. Criminals aren't totally stupid, they just want a quick and easy strike. They sure don't want to get in a gunfight and maybe end up with a murder charge. They'll just reverse course and hit the 7-eleven a couple of miles down the street.

Exactly, I hate when I hear people regurgitate what they hear on the MSM about open carry. A bad guy is not going to target you because you have a gun on your hip. Like TexasRecurve said, they like soft targets and will just wait and go to the gas station down the road. They don't want to be in a gun fight with a possibly more trained individual that could bring their life of crime to an abrupt stop. Same reason people don't target off duty cops, or cops in general. You think a thug goes into a gas station wanting to rob it and then a cop walks in with a gun on his hip and the thug says to himself ok, he has a gun I'm going to take him out first and then deal with the clerk all for the $80 in the cash register. No, they get the hell out of the gas station and go on to the next soft target. Please cite any statistics from any of the other 44 states that allow open carry, where someone that was open carrying a gun was targeted for that reason. Thats right they don't exist because it is a none issue.

Disclaimer, this is coming from someone that will still conceal carry, I just hate when people perpetuate stupid crap they hear on TV.

Most likely that's what would happen, that the way I see it.

Re: Open carry sightings - 12/29/15 12:23 AM

It doesn't matter open or CC. Honestly if I would be less likely to pick a fight with someone that I could see a gun vs someone who may or may not be armed. People seem to think it paints a target on your back. It doesn't in the bigger picture. Most criminals don't take the time to look over the whole situation.

If you see someone armed= 100% chance they have a weapon
If you see someone unarmed= 50% chance they have a weapon

The only advantage I see to it is I do not have to try so hard to conceal anymore.

I agree for simple hit and run robbery type crimes.

However, if the scenario is jihadists or other nutjobs busting in to commit mass murders - I just can't see them quietly slinking away because a guy has a pistol visible. I personally feel that there are times that concealed would be an advantage.

It has been legal a lot longer then it has been outlawed.

It was nice to drive down the road in the summer after work or play and sip on a cold one.

We have let government dictate way too much in our life, now the you must wear a seatbelt, I have yet to wear a seatbelt

Just got back from my foray into town. My Wife, my Daughter and I went out to dinner.

Stopped by the ATM to get some cash, then on to the Gas Station to fill up. Then went to Clear Springs (Nacogdoches), pretty good crowd there. Stood in line for a few minutes before being seated, a fair number of folks behind us.

Got up to go the Men’s Room once, had dinner. Left and stopped by Walmart to pick up a few items.

Result:

Either folks are unobservant, or don’t care if I carry openly.

I am going with ‘unobservant’….at this juncture, since I was wearing my BUG gun (SOB).

Had I been carrying my primary weapon (Stainless P-13 double stack 45) in my horizontal shoulder rig, I am certain it would have been noticed. I will try that in the near future and see what the reaction is.

I saw my first open carry at Kroger today. Strangely, he had the exact same pistol I was carrying (Sig Ultra Compact .45); his was out and shining with a stainless slide and mine was concealed and comfortable with a Nitride slide. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. He did appear to be gawking around to see who noticed; and I just went about normal activities. Proof again that I will continue to keep my business to myself. I prefer to not draw anyone's attention.

Re: Open carry sightings - 01/04/16 12:22 AM

I'm all for open carry - I grew up with it in small town rural areas where it was normal. Rarely saw it in the city.

Folks who choose to openly carry in an urban environment are generally either making a statement, or looking for attention - and that is most certainly their right as an American! By the same token, they need to remember that it is obvious that most people recognize it as attention seeking behavior - in an urban environment.

Go for it if you wish, but don't get all butt chapped if you get unwanted attention.......

It's pretty much a sign of having the "Hey, look at me I'm a bad*** syndrome."

There are a sizeable number of folks who are infatuated with guns - mostly younger urban types who didn't grow up with them and see them as some sort of power symbol - they are compensating IMO. I can't define it but I know it when I see it. It goes beyond OC...

NOT carrying to get a 'reaction', just saying I will carry in my normal mode (shoulder rig...due to a shoulder injury) and report any reactions (or lack thereof). For information's sake only. K?

Re: Open carry sightings - 01/04/16 04:17 PM

I've been thinking and that's usually not good so here goes . . .
Maybe we should all show our guns for a while here and there so that the general public gets used to it, sees that we are embracing our returned right and that there are more of us than they may have known about. Not saying always and everywhere but on occasion and in moderation.

I've only seeing people care less about printing and such. For example, I went to lunch today and saw four guys hop out of a SUV, and every one of them was printing very clearly. I could even tell generally what they were carrying, and whether they had a spare mag or not.

Don't know if they'd just taken off from shooting or what, but it's something I haven't seen around town before.

Printing isn't illegal so even if you are concealed carrying you can print all day and be good.

I saw my first one yesterday evening in Frisco. Some douche had it showing on his side, He could of easily pulled his shirt down and hid it.

He was wearing button down shirt and shorts,

I really see no reason for the general public to wear a handgun exposed in public, Now if he was on his way to hunt and had it on I could see it.

^^^^^^^^ Yep me too. wink

Glad someone called it to my attention though. Of all the things I KNOW I AM....I never knew I was a D-Bag.

So...I guess its true: "You're never too old to learn".

So, now you're saying you know his 'motives' too? Is it possible you just witnessed what is called 'Situational Awareness' (being aware of your surroundings), even if none too discreet?

We can surmise from the content of your original post...that you disagree with OC. That is your prerogative, but I guess I don't understand your intolerance for the legal activity of a fellow gun-owner? If YOU choose never to OC fine. But there is no reason to disparage those who do.

First: I'd like to say sinners have nothing to fear anymore. RedRanger and I agree on something so hell has frozen over. Second: So you don't understand the intolerance for the legal activity of a fellow gun owner. Apparently he believes the same as I do that people who feel the need to walk around in an urban environment with an exposed firearm are doing it because they want to show other people they have a gun on them.

I have been carrying a handgun concealed on me for 21 years because I have to as a requirement of my employment and because I feel that being armed is safer that not. I have never felt the desire to wear it in the open because I have nothing to prove and because I believe it's tactically unsound to do so. There are multiple ways of carrying concealed and still wear most any clothing one would desire.

I equate carrying an exposed firearm in an urban environment the same as the guy who sits on his very loud and obnoxious motorcycle racking the pipes as loud as he can. He is emotionally immature, feels inadequate and tries to make up for it by trying to look like the bad [censored] that he really knows he is not.

This makes responsible gun owners who have no social insecurity issues angry because it makes us all look bad in the eyes of the general public.

Ntxtrapper,....

Everyone is is entitled to an opinion....and well you know how that goes.

Been carrying concealed for almost 20 years as well, daily. "Tactically unsound".,,,,just a small scenario, I am standing in line at a convience store, bank or whatever and bad guy comes in, casing the place to rob, but sees someone with a gun IN THE OPEN, he/ she decides to not peruse his plan there...he/she is there for the money not a fight...but you have every scenario figured out.

Don't judge, you are not the all knowing....Leo. Maybe there are scenarios, comfortable wise you wish to carry openly and you can't...do not be jealous. It's out if your hands. Open your mind...crispy?

Ain't America great..DO NOT TELL ME MY WHAT IS AND WRONG IN YOUR EYES.., ESPECIALLY, when it is my right and it is legal.

There are a lot of times I am wearing professional attire, slacks shirt and tie, no jacket, because it is not a suit and I go to th store on the way home, to the mall to run errands...but I should not carry for my safety because it is not proper?? Open your mind please....not every scenarios is how you perceive it,,..I will say one more time...crispy? I know you know what that mean,...I hope. Next word is Critter.

Have a nice day.

I can open carry anywhere in the United States including on a commercial airplane but choose not to for the reasons I listed.

Quote: DO NOT TELL ME MY WHAT IS AND WRONG IN YOUR EYES.., ESPECIALLY, when it is my right and it is legal.

Actually the 1st amendment, that's the one before the 2nd, lets me do just that. If you want to look like a fool who is insecure and want to play cowboy and indians in a public place you can. I can also legally say anything about it on a public forum as well as point and laugh at you in any public place. By God America is great isn't it?

Again, Google crispy critter.

Now your arguing on weather you can voice your freedom of speech, but you already knew that, it just that your facts are not valid.

Rock on, be safe but open your mind.

I never said anything was a fact, just my opinion and the opinion of the vast majority of people in the world. You rock on too just remember that people are laughing at you for your need to show everyone you have a gun.

troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/)

Re: Open carry sightings - 06/04/16 12:41 PM

Ok....back on topic....I was in a certain catfish restaurant last night. In walks an older couple with what appears to be their son....early 20's I am guessing...bare with me here....Bad Lyle Lovett haircut, fitted black shirt, skinny'ish black jeans, black shoes, and BIG black hoop things in his ears(not hanging)....I think they are called gauged ears or something. Anyway, he could have used these things for hulahoops. Add to that all star attire a leather brown, double mag shoulder holster snugly fitted across his beanpole frame. I think he was going for the Hitman look sans the suit. He kind of reminded me of those weird brothers on that Alaskan Bush people show.

I have a pic but idk if I should post.....

If he is so proud of his accomplishment to carry a firearm like that I'm sure he wouldn't mind you posting the pic of him.

I have no issues with OC, I doubt I would ever do it, I think concealed is the way to go.

The douche in question intentions for him carrying OC was simply for attention......

Re: Open carry sightings - 06/08/16 03:50 AM

Saw a guy tonight in the Mexican place near my house. Most people probably wouldn't even have seen his gun. I only noticed because he walked right in front of me when I was siting down. First one I have seen I oc.

I saw a guy a couple weekends ago walk into a restaurant that my family and I were eating in. Bright pink golf shirt, with a black holster and full frame Glock held up by a black belt. He was literally screaming "LOOK AT ME!!" Kept turning in circles and pretending to talk to people in his group to make sure everyone could see it.

Was he literally screaming look at me? Or figuratively?

Ok Internet grammar police, let me restate. He was figuratively screaming, but my head did literally explode into a migraine from both the pistol and the loud pink shirt. roflmao

By chance was it one of you 2? grin

Re: Open carry sightings - 05/11/17 09:44 PM

Saw my first open carry this afternoon. I think the shirt was a Garland Police Academy polo. Regardless, it was untucked so it was pulled up and behind the grip to show it. Some sort of semi-auto in an outer-waste-band holster.
