CHL What would you do...?

CHL What would you do...? - 04/14/14 01:33 AM

I went to my Local AMC theater this afternoon. I had been to this theater many times, and had never seen a 30.06 sign, and have carried every time. Today, upon walking in, I noticed a small sign at the bottom right hand side of the door, and I had to get close to the door to even read it. It was a 30.06 sign, but was obviously much smaller than the 1" required, and was not conspicuously placed where the public could see. It was at foot level. What would you have done?

If it is not in one inch letters like the law the sign does not mean a thing... I would have gone in a watched the movie...

This would provide a "defense to prosecution" (I think that's what it's called?)

You would still take the ride, but might beat the charges in court.

Three words for you to practice..."What sign, officer?"

I did go in and watch the movie as I had already purchased tickets, and knew the sign was not legal. However, next movie I go to won't be at that theater.

I would have done the same. This is one of those situations where no one would even know you were carrying unless you needed to defend yourself(or wife/kids). I would much rather be in violation of 30.06 than be dead.

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 04/14/14 02:54 PM

Well, it's obvious that the theatre owner made an effort to comply with the 30.06 rule, but fell a bit short. So I would have complied with the request, even though it was poorly executed. It might also be a helpful gesture, after disarming yourself, to find the manager and gently inform him of the steps he would need to take to fully comply with 30.06. Then go enjoy the movie.

I would have went and watched the movie and never said a word.I would not say a word about the sign if we should know the law on the 30.06 sign so should they

I would have just watched the movie but boycotted the consession stand because of high prices.

Seriously, when was the last time you got patted down for no reason?

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 04/14/14 08:46 PM

Boycotting the concession stand is hard to do with a 5 year old saying "Daddy, I'm thirsty. Daddy, can I have some twizzlers?" "Daddy,I love you!" He already knows how to get what he wants.

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 04/14/14 09:14 PM

I would have entered and watched the movie, as the sign is not within legal specifications. Depending on how I felt, I might have approached the manager afterwards and inquired about their policy and the signage.

If it's not a legal sign, I don't comply with it. If it's legal, I follow the law. An illegitimate 30.06 is the exact same thing as a little picture of a gun with an X through it.

i don't get why they felt compelled to put the sign up but didn't make enough effort to do it right. seems pointless to me.

Good point. In thinking about this, I would suspect that the owner/manager probably knows the law - and did it that way on purpose. He or she can point to the sign to make the "anti" crowd happy, while knowing full well.......

I never saw that sign, enjoy the movie. I have pointed that very thing out to a few knotheads, they usually don't believe me. Then I tell them I'm done with their establishment.

A little 30.06 sign close to the ground only means that midgets can't carry in there. You were fine.

I'd have gone that time, but wouldn't go back.

I have a theory about this. A possible explanation would be that the owner knows exactly what they are doing. By posting a completely non-compliant 30-06 sign especially 1' above the ground, they are telling the legal CHL holder to "come on in and please bring your gun". And for the anti's who feel "safer" where evil guns aren't allowed, the owner has done his part to keep those idiots safe. I've seen the same sort of signage at other places where I guarantee you the people in their corporate risk management group knew exactly what was a legal 30-06 sign and what was not. If they truly did not want concealed guns carried on their premises, they would have put up a proper sign. My theory may not be correct, but it sure would explain the reason behind the bogus signs.

I'd have got a refund, and politely told them why.

I can't afford to be the test case for "I saw the sign and the internet lawyers said it wasn't valid".

I would have simply asked for my money back, even though the sign isn't legal, you would have still been out lawyer fees and court cost. I refuse to do business with any business that has that sign.

Lawyer fees and court costs for what? How would they know you are carrying a concealed weapon if it's concealed?

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 04/27/14 08:17 PM

If you have to use your weapon to protect yourself. Then they would know you were carrying. Also if you are carrying and it happens to show by accident, it happens all the time.

I would have enjoyed the movie.

The worst thing you can do is tell the manager his sign isn't legal. If you do, he will make it legal and then you will be helping him take the rights away from the rest of us.

My thinking exactly, owner/manager is a businessman and trying to keep both sides satisfied. More happy folks equals mas dinero.

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 05/06/14 03:21 PM

laugh I wasn't aware that there were specific requirements for letter width and height of the sign. I'm going to get some slightly out of spec signs and watch people scratch their head over it's legality. I bet at least one person will break out a tape measure.

I'm a butt hole. grin

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 08/20/14 01:08 AM

I would honor their wishes and not carry their its obvious they do not want me carrying there. I also would not give them my business anymore and I would make the manager aware that they have lost a long term customer and that when I get home and post on the forms they will lose even more.

Re: CHL What would you do...? - 08/26/14 05:07 AM

I would enjoy the movie with my family and I would not of said anything to the local manager. He's probably looking for a fight.
Instead, when I got home I would call their corporate office, and based on their response I would decide if I wanted to do business with them anymore.

But at no point would I correct them on the format of the sign. If they want to post the sign, then they need to follow the letter of the law, and it's their responsibility. Otherwise, their sign is invalid, and some other licensed CHL may want to ignore the invalid sign and carry a gun into their theater. If you correct their sign, then it will become enforceable. Why help the idiots?

It seems that that only way theaters want any guns coming in is through the exit door by criminals. bang
Not through the front door by law abiding citizens.

I don't carry a weapon to make a statement, nor do I carry to please others.

Concealed means nobody knows if I got it. No harm, no foul.

This. No need to educate them if they won't educate themselves.

Exactly...why would anyone tell them they had wrong dimensions or placement? Why?

Sign isn't legal I'm going in carrying. I won't educate the manager how to make it legal and I won't come back to the business.

Concealed is concealed. Pretty sure unless they pat every single patron down or use metal detectors, they are not stopping anyone (criminal or CHL holder) from carrying whatever they want into their theatres. You do what you think is right, after all... it's your life you're playing with. I don't go to theatres anymore at all because of this reason alone- and if I did, I'd do what I think would give me the best chance of protecting myself and my family.
