Brush hog gear box oil

How often do you change the gear box oil?

I've changed mine once in 14 years.

I change mine once a year and check it about once a month during the summer, a little oils a lot cheaper than a new gear box and it’s guaranteed to crap out at the worst possible time to...

Really no need to unless you submerge the shredder completely or have a leak. My tractor mechanic said they are sealed and best to leave them that way unless there is a need to mess with it. Mine hasn't been changed and it's 12 years old and on the third set of blades.

I changed mine out after about 10 years. From the look of it, there was a small amount of water that had gotten in.

I know a lot of old country farmers that just pump the gearbox full of grease and call it a lifetime.
If the seals go South, the grease doesn't run out.
A good tacky bearing grease is what they use.

They do it in their bushogs and post augers because they work them for a living and down time costs money.

that's all my dad ever did, pull the plug, pump in grease, replace plug.

After I bought my Kubota (2009) that had a 7' shredder, I sold my dad's old Ford 951 diesel with 6' shredder that was likely bought new in the early 1980s. that had never been changed, probably close to 30 years and hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of heavy use.

As long as it doesn't look like a milk shake, I just make sure it is filled to the appropriate level before each use.

Ours is a 2007 model. The level has been checked but never changed. No plans to change it.

Remind me to stop loaning my equipment out, you guys are killing me on the no servicing stuff lol

I checked mine last weekend, and try to check level once or twice a season, but have never replaced. 6 year old land pride.

I do both of mine every two years. That’s a total of five gear boxes, less than a bucket of oil and two hours time. If you have ever disassembled a gearbox that has gone yeas and years with no oil change, you would understand why. Also keep in mind there is no filter, only the magnetic plug.

Never. I pump some grease in them with a grease gun. Those gear boxes are considered low RPM. The grease is thicker and if a seal leaks, it won't drain the gearbox causing damage. If the gearbox gets warm the grease will get thinner. Lubricats just fine. Have been doing this for years. If I had equipment under warranty, I would what the manufacturer recommends.

Mine is 2 years old and I changed the gear oil already. I do wash down my shredder with a hose every once in a while to keep grime from building up and I believe some moisture gets into the breather valve on top because the glass window showed a little milky gray fluid color. The issue is draining them, there is no plug so had to by a turkey baster and a piece of hose to suck out the old oil.

I changed mine out last week due to a bent blade. This is on a Brush Hog Finish mower (20 years old) that I was abusing to mow the neighbors place that didn't get cut for hay last year. I knew I hit something as it started vibrating but I just needed to do about 4 more laps and I would be done. Well it vibrated enough to loosen the lid on top of the gearbox and it fell off and needless to say I lost the gear oil. The new bolts have lock washers on them so it won't happen again. The oil has been changed several times and has always looked good, but oil is cheaper than a gearbox.

Probably a lot to do with not making a living on it. Your equipment probably sees more use in a month than many personal use type equipment sees in a decade.
