Butcher block island top

Butcher block island top - 07/17/19 02:57 AM

In building our barn apartment, we decided after cabinets and countertops were in to have an island added.

Wife wanted a different look than granite for the top. We ordered a 3x6 oak butcher block from lumber liquidators.

I finally got it cut down the week, sanded to 220 and finished with 3 coats of waterlox. I’m pretty pumped about the end result.

Looks great. I’m a fan of Waterlox, having used it on tabletops, blanket chests, small fancy wooden furniture, and gunstocks. After maybe 4 years, no complaints at all. Well, it does cure slowly, so that’s a minor gripe.

I replaced the tabletop in our travel trailer with one in old reclaimed mahogany, and gave it 3 or 4 coats of Waterlox. It has held up under stress, and not even a water ring from drink glasses. So far anyway.

That is too pretty to knife. Tell me you have other cutting boards to use.

That looks sharp, now time to do something about those floors..

Surely he isn’t going to actually use it as a cutting board. Way too pretty, and Waterlox will suffer.

Sore subject. They were supposed to be polished, sealed and waxed. Pictures I saw of previous jobs looked awesome. My results were blah. Actually made them come back because they looked like total sh*t first go round. They’re really dirty currently, but look decent when clean. I’ll probably eventually go back with a vinyl plank, but not now. We’re moving into this 700ft apartment in the next 10 days. 😳

Lots if cutting boards. And actually going to use the cut off to make another.
