Remove holly bushes???

Remove holly bushes??? - 09/30/15 08:36 PM

Any efficient ideas on removing holly bushes. I want them up, roots as well, but the handy guy I hired was only able to loosen the soil on one and yank it with a pickup before realizing it was a bigger job time and equipment wise than he anticipated. Now I guess it falls back on me to do it. Might take me a couple months (14 left) but I got time, just no stamina.

That's some work man. I cut the tops off them and then get busy with a pick and an axe. Didn't remove every root, but got the biggest ones I could. I did 10 in 2 days. Just remember, for every branch you see above ground, there will be just as many roots below ground and generally the same size as the bush.

I'd rent a bobcat and invest in some chain. One day job with the correct equipment.

I used my truck and some 1/4" cable and pulled them out of the ground.

Same here, truck and a chain. Will be easier if it has rained recently.

I did the truck and chain, then filled the hole with Round up and let it sit for a day or so before I filled the hole back in. The one hole I didn't Round up, I had another bush sprout.

Like HogBranch said, get the ground really wet and they will come up easier. We pulled up some shrubs with a front end loader, got 1 out dry then watered. Much easier with soggy roots.

We pulled some shrubs at my in-laws house. Used a chain to the front bumper of the jeep and put it in 4Low. Backed up and put tension on the chain. We had to soak the root system pretty good to help it come out. Round-up or remedy in the hole after it dried out would take care of residual roots.
