Not a cactus buck! Cactus bucks never come out of velvet!

I wonder what a deer like this would look like as a euro mount, might be kinda cool.

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 03:04 AM

that is crazy!

Posted By: BowHuntinTX

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 03:39 AM

That is strange. I thought that if it was a doe that it would never come out of velvet. Not enough testosterone to harden the horns or something...

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 03:46 AM

cool deal. sometype of gene deficiency i have read.

Posted By: BOBO the Clown

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 03:50 AM

Congrats.. very suprising it was hard horned, but I think there was a big 8 shot last year in Brady that was hard horned.

That Doe's got a nice rack, congrats.

Cactus buck? Clue me in guys on this one. We have a 10 pointer on our ranch that is still in velvet. Saw him last year as well, do they shed their antlers each year but just do not shed the velvet?

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 04:16 AM

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 05:37 AM

so i wonder... could u have gotten a ticket if that was a buck only county?

Posted By: helomech

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 05:41 AM

No it would be considered a buck regardless of what is down stairs.

If it has horns, it has to be tagged as a buck in Texas.

Cactus bucks never shed thier velvet or antlers! In real cold conditions some parts of the rack may freeze and break off, but they never actually shed the velvet or antlers! The antlers grow all year long!

I wish there was some way to score deer like that and come up with a square inch measurement. Like have a laser measure all the horn and them come up with a score. I think square inch would be better.

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 02:30 PM

huh? Doe's can have antlers? I am confused.

Posted By: kyotee1

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 02:35 PM

Female deer can have antlers, it is a genetic defect and just as helo said, if a deer has antlers and they are not covered with skin and hair, they are tagged as a buck.

Seen a few in East Texas and they are generally quite large deer.

You can score them. I think they take the largest beam and call it the "main" beam. Then count everything else as abnormal points. It could be subjective though, as to which one is counted as the main beam. Would hate to be the scorer on that one.

Re: 26 point DOE - 11/06/09 04:18 PM

That thing is crazy lookin. I wonder what it would score. Looks like alot of mass.

You could measure anything but it wouldn't be a score it would just be measurements. B&C will not score a deer unless it has a definitive main frame. That is just how the system was designed. Here is an article to another deer like this where it is stated that it couldn't be scored. http://www.ncgameandfish.com/hunting/whitetail-deer-hunting/NC_0905_01/

Re: 26 point DOE - 12/16/09 03:46 AM

I read in a book a couple of years back I think it was called Whitetails by Rodney Marburger out of Kerrville. If I remember right they still have all their male organs but they will be located somewhere else in the body. just deformed
Will make a cool mount.

Back when I was a kid 45 years ago when leases in Llano cost 150.00 per gun alot of the bucks would be still in velvet through January then drop their antlers.
