CBS11TV Helping out

Hunters for the Hungry

is a statewide wild game donation program that provides a healthy source of protein to Texans in need.

The mission is threefold:

1. Alleviate hunger and malnutrition in Texas.

2. Provide a meaningful outlet for hunters wishing to help their communities.

3. Promote stewardship of the environment through sensible wildlife management plans.

A special thanks for support andcommitment to Hunters for the Hungry:

How does it work?

Hunters bring their tagged, legally harvested deer to a participating meat processor, and pay a nominal fee to cover basic processing costs. The meat processor grinds the venison into burger, packages and stores it for local food assistance providers to pick up.

What does it cost?

The processing fee, generally about $30-$40, helps to cover the costs of the processor’s equipment, labor, and overhead. The processing fee may be tax deductible for the hunter; consult a tax advisor for information. The processor provides a receipt for such purpose.

Where does the meat go?

All meat donated to the Hunters for the Hungry program is distributed to families and individuals in need through local food assistance providers such as food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, etc.

Charitable food assistance agencies in Texas seeking Hunters for the Hungry donations should contact TACAA at (800) 992-9767, ext. 506, to learn more. Individuals in need of food assistance, should phone 211 or visit www.211texas.org for help.

How can I help?

1. Donate a deer.

2. Make a monetary donation.

3. Raise money in your community to offset processing fees.

Visit www.tacaa.org/hunters.htm or call (800) 992-9767, ext. 506.

Not sure how to add this to the Hunters feeding the hungry list? - 12/20/09 01:36 AM

Midway Processing in Old Katy was on the list here in Fort Bend County. Phone# 281-391-3101

Rhode's Taxidermy/ Processing in Kerrville has also been a provider in Kerr County. Phone# 830-896-6996

I'm not sure of the fee's though for either.

Once they are added to the sticky this post can be deleted. Thank You!

The Dallas Safari Club also helps fund a few processors around the state. Check the attached link and see if one is near you.

This is a great program that benefits everyone!

Re: Hunters for The Hungry..Processors by CITY then by COUNTY - 12/13/10 09:13 PM

In Amarillo they don't have any "Hunters for the Hungry" offical processors, but Hunters Link will take donated deer and process them for a local food bank charity for $30. They are really good people that get all my processing business.

July 15-21, 2011

Texas Hunters for the Hungry serve nine million and counting cheers

Texas Hunters for the Hungry, a program administered by the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies, Inc. has exceeded two million pounds of venison donated over the last 20 years. This year the program has contributed 178,662 pounds of venison to more than 100 organizations that serve low income people across Texas. Hunters take legally harvested deer to a participating meat processor, pay a nominal fee to cover basic processing costs and the meat processor does the rest. All meat donated to the program is distributed to families and individuals in need through local food banks, food pantries and soup kitchens. For more information call 1-800-992-9767 ext. 506 or visit www.tacaa.org/hunters-for-the -hungry.

Does the organization take hogs as well as deer? I've been looking for a way to thin the hog herd without wasting the meat.

Anyone else think it's b.s. for me to donate an animal I shot on my tag with my $ for the license, feed, ammo, gas, gutting, etc etc only to have to pay another $30 for a processor to take the back straps and tenderloins home and turn the rest into chili meat. I'd rather process the animal myself and hook my buddies up that are more broke than me and don't get to hunt.

Re: Hunters for The Hungry..Processors by CITY then by COUNTY - 11/18/11 04:31 PM

I was going to donate a couple hogs, till I found out it was going to be $70. I am donating the meat. If I wanted to donate money I would have donated money.

I will probably donate one large deer, but only one as I cannot afford to keep paying the fee.

Also, I was told $35 by the processor.

"Hunters for the Hungry
Participating Meat Processors by CITY
GARLAND David's Meat Market, Inc. 4010 N Jupiter Rd. (972) 495-8315
Skinned deer only"

As of November 6th 2011 David's Meat Market no longer processes deer. I tried to process my first buck here and had to go to Rockwall Deer Processing instead. I'm not sure if they participate in Hunter's for the Hungry. If they do I will add their information here.

Re: Hunters for the Hungry Processors by CITY then by County - 12/09/11 05:01 PM

Not in Texas, but we have a program called: SHARE THE HARVEST for deer donations. There is atleast one processor in each County that is participating. Saw a news article last weekend that said local hunters have donated over 8000# of ground venison so far to the food bank for this year. They estimate that is 32,000 portions of excellent lean protein rich meat added to the tables.
I have THREE doe tags to use in a Managed Muzzleloader Hunt I was drawn for. The hunt is this weekend. I plan to keep one for my freezer, but what I get over that will be donated. Our Conservation Dept pays $40 per deer of the cost on each donated whole deer. The hunters portion is $25 (AND IT'S TAX DEDUCTABLE!)

Its easy for us to find local people that need the meat. But its not very often that we have meat to donate. Just about everyone that comes here to hunt will take the meat home with them.

I donated to an outfit in Burleson last year. I shared with a farmer that I met that I was donating pigs that I had trapped and some deer that I hunted and before I knew it I was hunting and trapping almost every night with that landowner so we could donate meat. This kind of thing has a contageous property to it. Spread the word and the wealth

Are you able to donate a deer and keep the backstraps/loins, or does the deer have to be whole? If they are going to grind it, and we have to skin it before dropping it off, we might as well take those cuts for our time, right?

Got an email back from the Dallas Safari Club and it looks like they are going to again sponsor the Hunters for the Hungry program. They chip in and cover the processing fee at a few deer processors around the state. Here's the link to the ones they sponsored last year.

Re: Hunters for the Hungry Processors by CITY then by County - 11/07/12 08:06 AM

I hunt because I'm hungry. I also do ALL my own processing. I do feel though that if there is going to be a donation to a good cause. Processors should donate to a good cause as well. I know that people pay good money for leases and corn is thru the roof. There is also gas to get the game there as well. Hunters donate meat processors donate labor and together help feed others just my .02 think some processors might second guess the charge or not participate. It would be hard for me to attach my name to a good cause (donation) when I has charged someone to help out the cause.

Goldthwaite, Mills county,...there's a Church group there that works with the Meat Locker plant in town and will take your deer in. The meat is used to feeds locals in the area. You can pay the $30 to help the locker plant offset some costs or they will take it with no charge.

Re: Hunters for the Hungry Processors by CITY then by County - 02/26/13 05:11 AM

I hope this is ok to post this here. I'm in Galveston County and I would gladly pay the processing fee to be able to receive a deer or hog. I'm a single mom with 2 sons and my best friend husband used to keep my freezer stocked with game and fish. But he passed away 3 years ago of cancer. So now struggling to keep meat in the freezer. I am already registered on the Hunters for the Hungry site, which a hunter friend on facebook that lives in IL told me about. But thought I would take of chance posting here. I know none of our local food banks ever have any kind of game. I can even travel a bit to pick up.

And me and my youngest son just relocated up to Bedford. I have started checking out places up here, but still no luck. But than again, still finding my way. Have only been here a little over 2 weeks.

Should be able to help out with a deer or two and once the pigs start coming back around, that shouldn't be a problem either.

May not be able to get any saltwater fish, but got a 5 acre pond stocked with bass, black crappie, bluegill, channel and blue catfish and can have those available too.

About Hunters for the Hungry

Hunters for the Hungry is a statewide hunger relief program dedicated to providing a healthy source of protein to needy Texans. In Texas, 1 in 5 people struggle to afford food.

The Texas Association of Community Action Agencies, Inc., has worked with the Hunters for the Hungry program for the past two decades, and administered the program directly for 15 years. Since the program’s inception, it has provided nearly 2.5 million pounds of meat – or an estimated 10 million servings – to Texans in need.

In 2013, the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies, Inc., entered into an agreement with the Texas Food Bank Network to take over the Texas Hunters for the Hungry program.

For information on the program, visit the Texas Hunters for the Hungry website or contact Lee Pipkin at (325) 617-2228.

Individuals in need

Hunters for the Hungry does not donate directly to individuals. Individuals in need of food assistance should call 211, visit 211texas.org, or contact a food assistance provider directly.

Go to the website listed a few posts up or do a search on Hunters for the Hungry. The website tells interested processor's how to get in touch and get listed. I haven't checked this year but the Dallas Safari Club used to help subsidize the processing fee.

Re: Hunters for the Hungry Processors by CITY then by County - 10/28/15 11:18 PM

2 years ago I had the opportunity to shoot some deer on MLD property, and wanted to donate one of the deer to a food bank. No one would take it. Several places wanted over $100 for their trouble to donate the deer and others said they could not take it due to wild meat and not knowing the condition of the animal. I didn't want to pay this, so I kept the deer. I spent some time finding places to no avail.

If you know of a place around Dallas, or between Breckenridge and Dallas, I'll donate this year.

New information, updates, and listing of processors.

Share Your Harvest

If you'e running out of room in your freezer, consider supporting Hunters for the Hungry and donating your deer to a participating meat processor to help feed needy families.
You can also make a donation when you purchase your hunting license. Donations help cover the costs of processing the donated venison, and make it possible for more Texas families in need to enjoy a quality protein. Last year, Texas license buyers generously donated more than $106,000 and Texas hunters gave an astounding 54,000 lbs. of venison – thank you!

Great cause. Hall's in Coleman doesn't charge anything if you've already gutted the deer.

Can anyone here say for sure, that I could KNOW that the meat I paid to process and donated to HH actually got to the needy and didn't end up in the sausage bin of the processor so he could sell a few pounds here and there?

I hate to be the one casting a doubt and I don't have any particular processor in mind, I'm just saying, what keeps the processor from not turning it in?
Is there a part of the system that keeps them accountable for the meat that is left with them?

Interesting how all these comments the processor should do it for free. Bet you won’t find another suitable way to process donated game to give away and then you think processor should be on the hook to receive, process, package and store every animal that comes in. Maybe if it was 4 deer a year, but I be the number is far greater for a lot of them. They are for profit companies offering a service at a reduced cost, that IS their donation and without them otherwise likely would not be available. Maybe y’all need to find a cheaper solution and post it on up. $.25 a # is pretty cheap but maybe you can get the cost down.

Selling a few pounds " here or there", is illegal. Most processors aren't going to risk major fines to fudge their books. Processors are checked regularly by the GW.... Kenny Fred's deer processing in Bluff Dale is who we use. Best I've found. I've used a lot. Their smoked jalapeno cheese sausage is out of this world.

As of a couple years ago Kubys in Dallas took donated deer or pig. All or part, (if you only wanted, say, 20 lbs. of sausage) though they were not part of this program they did send it to a local food bank. No charge to the hunter.

Sounds like a great cause, wish there were participating processors in Bosque and Coryell Counties where I hunt. Prob be able to donate 1 or 2 a year.

I think Halls is doing what all processors should do. As hunters we donate the deer in good faith after spending what is quite a bit per pound in dollars and cents. Maybe the processors should be a bit more generous.

Re: Hunters for the Hungry Processors by CITY then by County - 11/01/19 12:36 PM

By paying the nominal fee to the processor you are essentially paying them for their time only without profit. The program would not work if all of the processors were asked to work for free. So, yes, you've spent money on the tag and the gas and the corn but come on. All of us spend THOUSANDS of dollars a year when you add up all of the receipts. What's another $35 if the result is 50 pounds of meat that feeds people?

Too bad the three I called are no longer working numbers. Throckmorton, Breckinridge and Pilot Point. Anyone on here from Throckmorton know if Escalon’s is still open? New number?

Tried a new processor this year. Wildwood Game in Lockhart.
Small independent guy, spoke with him at length before taking a deer to him.

Had some jalepeno cheese sausage and smoked sticks made..
great stuff
