Son’s First Buck - 10/08/22 11:03 PM
So last year he got a couple doe with the .243. I decided to let him try for a buck during bow season with the crossbow. Very interesting hunt this morning. We had the buck he ended up shooting within 40 yards for over an hour. He just couldn’t get a shot on him. Buck ends up being chased off by a cull that should be shot, but isn’t legal. The boy gets super frustrated, but I keep him in it. Telling him I think that buck isn’t far off, and will come back. After 20 minutes, he comes back. Right at 20 yards perfectly broadside, for 15 seconds, before that same cull runs him off again. Luckily our buck was at 30 now. I told him where to aim, and shoot when he felt good. He let it loose, and that buck literally didn’t know what hit him. He ran 30 yards and stopped to look around. Blood was pouring out of him. He staggered around then fell. My son is 8 years old, and he couldn’t be happier. Deer was 140 lbs field dressed.

Great kid, great buck, and great pictures, especially the one with Great-grandad. (And he doesn't look anywhere near 90. I should be so blessed to make it that long, much less look that good.) Well done.

Yeah Grandpa still gets on the John Deere and feeds hay.
Wow! Congratulations to the young young man! At that age kids are usually shooting a bb gun at stuff.

He set the bar high with his first buck. So glad that Great Grandpa was able to be there. Your son's smile tells it all.
Well done.

I've been telling him how important patience is in hunting, and especially bow hunting. He definitely got a lesson in that on this hunt. I went back and forth on whether to let him shoot that for his first buck. Finally decided yes. Probably ruined him.
