A Deer Hunter's Hymn - 10/28/21 04:33 PM

I composed this years ago on a long lone drag out of the Honey Island Wildlife Management Area. I thought you guys might enjoy it.

Reminds me of the first buck I killed back in 1972 in the Hurricane Bottoms in Arkansas. Fresh out of the Navy and had an urge to start deer hunting so I started scouting where to hunt. Read everything I could find about hunting deer and finally found an area with scrapes and loads of tracks. I had to borrowed my Dad's Winchester 1897 12 gauge as all I owned at that time was a 22. (Still have that gun today). I remember that back then you loaded slug, buckshot, buckshot, slug in that order when using a shotgun. Well on my second hunt I got a nice 8 point and did my best to field dress it and it was ugly. Started dragging and drug it and drug it down a rutted two track road. After what seemed like an hour a couple of guys in an old Willis Jeep came up the trail and we loaded it and got a lift to my car. Ended up giving them half of it as I was so glad to not have to drag it anymore. Had it mounted and would still have it if it had not started aging so much. Thanks for bringing back that memory.
