Dumb deer....

Dumb deer.... - 10/03/21 12:45 AM

I was building a shelf in our big box blind today. I was running a battery powered cirular saw in the stand and drills. My truck was parked under the stand. I look up and saw a doe eating at the feeder as I worked. I mean I had just got done cutting a board. It being awfully hot in the stand, I kept working figuring of course that she'd take off. She kept eating for about 4 minutes while I was running the tools and putting up boards. You can't see the deer in the pic but it was at this treeline about 75 yards....WTH.

I topped off the feeder two weeks ago and spilled a little corn. While I was there I did a little work on the blind with a Ryobi jigsaw and had two does come up unperturbed and they started eating the spilled corn. I bet in one month those same two does will run off if they hear me have the slightest cough, sneeze or fart!

Pretty common when they're not pressured much.

I have installed new carpet in a deer blind popping that staple gun, and throwing the scraps out the door with deer feeding 75-100 yrds away (young deer). Made all sorts of repairs to blinds in the off season and the young ones don't care.

That all changes once you start putting pressure on them.

Not uncommon!
We had a buck that would hang around our feeder and would stand in the brush about 50 yards away and wait for us to finish putting the feed in the feeder and as we were driving off the deer would be walking out of the brush and straight to the feeder while we were barely driving off.
We watched him grow from a spike to a 3 1/2 year old eight, and we figured the neighbor got him as he quit showing up once he developed the head gear.

My brother in Oklahoma swears being quite is bad idea around deer! I have seen him step out of Dodge diesel running to get another beer (driving in pasture counting cows), scream bloody murder at dogs in truck, get out to break up dog fight in back of truck, end even stomp on every branch in his way while walking to his rattling spot only to see deer come investigate whats happening. He said long as they hear truck running they think they can't be shot and if you are raising cain you can't be looking for deer, and walking to a stand and cattle in same pasture...have you ever heard a quite cow? Carry on and when you get set up then watch close to see what is lurking around!

I understand them hanging around where they are used to seeing people and activity. They don't see anyone where I hunt (except me doing carpenter work). It's mostly timber land or at least heavy forest. Maybe your brother has it figured out.

I have a place way the heck out and this is similar to my experiences other than if I tried counting cows on beer I would happily report that the herd approximately doubled since last count...

Curiosity drives some of them...hunger drives some of them also.

I filled a feeder Saturday evening and they were on it in 8 minutes. We've been really dry in Mills the last 8-10 weeks and they're HUNGRY.

I think there is a diff3erence when you are trying to be sneaky and hide and when your just out there doing your thing. Many times deer dont run from a tractor out in the field. On our old lease, very pressured, we cut fire wood for the landowner every year, we would always have a few deer hanging around us browsing with several chainsaws running and a few trucks and trailers and people walking around.
