Should I fence around the feeder ?

Should I fence around the feeder ? - 09/27/21 01:09 PM

Have a broadcast feeder and there are about 8 javelina hitting it quite a bit.
Another hunter close by has a gravity feeder and is getting a ton more pics of deer than me.
Only reason I do not want to put out a gravity feeder is I would like to get the deer on a schedule of my time and not have them only coming out at night on a gravity feeder.
Wondering if I should leave it alone or put up some 36 inch hog panel around the feeder to stop the javelinas or just leave it alone.
What do you all think, do you think it will help and possibly bring in more deer or not have the deer scared off by the javelinas?

When I first bought my land, I really liked shooting hogs year round. Unfortunately, the more I fed the hogs, the more they showed up. That led to less and less deer. Deer do not like being around hogs. Then I fenced in the feeder, but it was a battle, because the hogs still wanted in, and they where very good at destroying my fence. Eventually, I built a fence strong enough to keep them out, but not away. This didn't really help, so I moved the feeder to another spot and put a hot wire around it and my food plot. It's about half an acre, maybe a little under. The hot wire is a foot off of the ground. Deer stop over it, hogs walk right into it and get zapped. This worked better then I hoped for. Since then, my deer numbers have gone up, and the hogs stay away.

Pen the feeder now, you will be much happier in the long run. Build a large enough pen to keep all the corn that is spun inside the pen. You will see more deer than now. If you don't fence it, your buddy hunting close by will thank you ever time he kills a deer. grin

And fill your bag limit of javelina, usually two, each year. They ARE a legal game animal, so carefully cut out the back straps, avoiding the gland, and cook it. drink7 (Whiskey helps.)

Always pen your feeders unless you are a hog shooting addict. LOL. I love to shoot pigs too, just not at my deer feeders.

We built 6 feeder pens this past Saturday. 13 panels each. We had one more to go and the young guys quit on me. I wanted to finish the last one(out of 11 total) really bad but in retrospect if we had done that last one, it may of killed this old man. Ive come home to recover and wash clothes and then Im going back up to finish(among many other projects.) Doing all that work and coming up one short is like taking a .... and not wiping. Younger generation......
Anyway, if you have problems with hogs or javis then I highly recommend penning them out.

make a pen with 12 x 16' panels, cut the T-post flush with the panel and enjoy much better hunting.

Javelinas are definitely vacuum cleaners when it comes to corn but I've never know them to affect deer activity like hogs will.
I just put up a 6 panel pen around one of mine this past weekend and with 6 t-posts it was $200. Ridiculous cost now on all steel items and I wouldn't have done it at all except that the ranch owner requested me do it.
Of course that feeder throws corn out about 40' to each side and this 6 panel pen is only about 30' diameter so the hogs are still going to get some and if they really want it a big one will lift those panels up like there are not even there. smdh

I honestly don't think the gravity feeder vs your timed feeder is the reason he is getting more deer in.
How much corn are you throwing and how far does your feeder disperse it? Maybe the answer is to just feed a little more to give the deer more of a chance to eat.
Another answer is to eliminate 2 of those javelina and if that doesn't help take another hunter and eliminate a couple more! grin

You, sir, need a motorized t post pounder or a tractor to put in those poles. We have it down to where 3 people can put up a 12 panel (16' each panel) pen in 90 minutes or less with one of these:

You too can own one for only about a Grand. A little hard work never hurt anyone.

Having done the shoulder surgery and rehab thing, I can’t say it was a ton of fun. I’d gladly buy the gadget before I did it again.

Maybe turn those javelinas into money by selling hunts, until they thin out or they get the point, lol.

Get into the airgun shooting crowd, guys wil pay a lot for an opportunity to plug a javelina with a souped up pellet rifle.

As others said, shoulder surgeries suck and I've been putting one off. I'm not afraid of work, but I don't believe in unnecessary work. Our driver has put up 5 or 6 pens, helped us chip through limestone while digging post holes, and will probably run for 20 years with that little honda motor. If you have a lot of work in front of you, go buy one (yes, they are a grand). If you don't have a lot of work in the future then rent one and spend $30 a day.

Did you use 13 16' Hog Panels? Dang I thought I was overdoing it by using 10.

I've heard numerous folks say it is best to build circular pens. Opinions?

Round creates efficiently creates more usable space, but hard to tighten barb wire if you end up needing. it.

I personally would never build another round pen if cattle are present or anticipated.

Do you mind sharing why?

Tightening a strand of barb wire on a round pen is not practical.

Not sure if he jumped in the pen or just rared up and laid over the panels. But he eventually showed the calves how it was done and rest is history. They tore the panels down and I had to rebuild it with 50" cattle panels.
