Practice Estimating Measurements

Practice Estimating Measurements - 07/18/21 11:03 PM

Here is some warm up for the upcoming season on a deer I shot last year. Someone else measured it and the total generated a bit of discussion here. I measured it myself fairly carefully and came up with a different total. Take a minute for your estimate and I will put up my total in a couple of days. Regular 12 oz. soda can for scale reference.

I thought this was gonna be about a man's idea of what 6 (or 9 inches shocked ) is. bolt

160-162 from those pics. Even with the reference for size, the close up photos make it hard to judge tine and beam length.

Maybe it would be better practice to put it about 100 yards away for more realistic practice. Will try that next time.

158 3/8

It would help if it was a pic of the live deer. Referencing to the deers body is the closest to real life in the field. No game camera pics?

I went an average of 5",6.5",12" and 7.5" on tines then just guessed 98-100" down. That score looks low for the overall look of the rack. The overall look of the rack is more upper 160's from the frame it has.

From that pic I can tell I am short on beam length and little off on spread. His down frame is more like 103-105 I think from that pic.

Jeffbird knows what he is doing Pictures are always deceiving but my gut says mid 160s plus - no matter what he scores that is a very cool buck

21" spread, low 150s on score

98-101 Down
58-60 up

156-161

I'll say 158 gross

Seeing the pic now, more like low 160s.

It’s all but impossible to score one laying on a bench without size and body references but if we’re guessing I’d say upper 150”s to low 60’s but he could be upper 50”s to 70”s when the tapes put on.

Probably wrong, but came up with 147".

Ok, lots of good eyes on here.

Here are some pretty careful, but conservative measurements.

To me, this deer is a very classic looking South Texas deer.

The symmetry is striking.

The long upward curved beams always are hard for me.

Nice deer regardless what he scored and a 150” deer is big by most guys standards up When they get to the 150” and up range without the location and knowing the body sizes from the area it’s all but impossible to measure for me other than educated guesses.

Jeff, I dont know anything about your measuring abilities but he really looks higher scoring than that. Definitely cant tell much from the rack just laying there, but he looks really big in the live pic. Of course pics can be very deceiving and we dont know the body size/weight. For sure, absolutely no doubt he is a great deer for most anyone.
From my experience if some one is completely inexperienced at scoring deer, they are likely to come up with wildly inaccurate scores and usually too high. However, if some one knows what measurements to take but is inexperienced at specifically where to take them at, then they will usually be low. Very much just my opinion on that.

Missed it by 3 inches. What do I win?
