155 10pt. The bigger the better. I understand what youre getting at and if the numbers were a little close I would opt for the 8 but not with15" difference.
Thank you for starting a worthy thread thats not political or non deer related..... Yall got 4" or so out there? Miss the hail? 50 mph wind?

Hail missed Arlington it was in DQ's range. Got about an inch here last 24 hours. Bunch out west. Got to greening up out there nicely.

Depends on the 10pts 4ths, if they are short, then the 10 has a bigger overall frame, but if they are 7” long usually the 8 pt will have a better frame

But in general frame impressives me more then tine number

If all measurments are equal between the two except for the G4's on the 10 then I take the 10 every time! That would equate to 7.5" G4's and thats impressive. Now if that 140" 8 is really a main frame 7 sporting a 5" drop tine for his 8th point then the 8 point has to die.

I don't disagree with you, but if that were to hold true then the G3s would be shorter than the G4s. The more likely case is 100 on the bottom which leaves you 55 up top (pretty reasonable). A decent breakdown would be:

G1s = 8
G2s = 20
G3s = 17
G4s = 10

I'll take the consultant answer and say it depends. I'd want age and some history of growth

140" eight is impressive but i'm still looking for a mainframe 10. I have a mainframe 9 with a kicker so i'd go with 155" typical 10.

G1-G3 being same it’s actually going to be less then 7.5

4th measurement typically is higher because G4 moves it backup and closer to M3. But probably only talking 1/2 in any way

I agree but will always love big 8s.
In the end, it is the one that is the most impressive and that is almost always going to be the buck with the bigger frame.

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/01/21 12:44 AM

Depends on age for me. If the 10 is 3-4 years old and the 8 is 5+, the 8 is probably getting their ticket punched. More to it than points and score for me. I'll spend my tag on a 6 year old 6 point before burning a superior genetic deer that still has potential.

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/01/21 01:12 AM

I would shoot whichever one looked bigger standing on the hoof. I like big framed deer and never been much of score guy myself. If the 8 had a wide tall I’d shoot him any day over the 10 if he was narrowed with long times and a lot of mass

155" Ten would be nice in Texas

I like big 8's and a 150" eight would get me excited....a 140" eight is a nice deer but I would pass, unless it was with a bow

With 18.75 inches per point, the 8 will be a much more impressive specimen.

For all yall that love big 8s I wonder if you would pass up the Typical 10 I saw this weekend. A Texas killed low fence from 2019 that as a Typ 10 grossed in the mid 190s and his g4s were only about 4 and 5"s. He had a 4" kicker and he still NETTED 188 as a Typical. Biggest framed 10 I have ever seen. 28" beams and 26.5" inside. I hate to tease without a pic but I dont know if the hunter would want me posting. Just picture Dstrouds 8 but add g4s and a bunch of spread. Hopefully the big 10 will be in San Antonio for the Statewide TBGA show in July.

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/25/21 08:53 AM

Guesing you are referencing something akin to this with 28 and 29 inch beams. Even so, its apples and oranges when you bring in a 188 typical ten with a 4 inch kicker into the discussion about preferences on a 140 8 or a 155 10.

If he was 4 yes, if he was 5 it’s a coin toss, if he was 6 in a drought it’s a coin toss,

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/25/21 02:53 PM

Yes Hud, very similar to that 10. And also, yes, I was off topic but after seeing the mount this weekend and being so blown away by the huge frame I just couldnt resist working it into a thread somewhere. Sorry.
Back to topic- I like big 8s, but no way would I shoot a 140 8 over a 155 10. But in reality I wouldnt shoot either one unless the 10 was real heavy with good brows and very symmetrical and evenly proportioned.

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/25/21 03:41 PM

Thanks guys for bringing this one back on topic. My original thoughts were two mature bucks, straight 8 at 140", no stickers or kickers and straight 10 at 155", again no stickers or kickers. I have several low 130 8s and a 10 or two in low 140s. Of course I'd take a 180" 10 over just about any 140-150, 8.

Re: 140" 8 pt. or 155" 10 pt. - 05/25/21 04:10 PM

If the 140” 8pt and the 155” 10 pt were standing side by side I would shoot the 10 pt., if they met the age requirement. I had an opportunity to shoot a 6.5 yo 140” 8pt that was was trying to tear down a mesquite bush. I took advantage of the opportunity. I had seen 2 tens that would have gone 150” and 160”, but were only 4 and 5 yo so they weren’t available for harvest.
