Lost winch nut on a Sweeney feeder

Lost winch nut on a Sweeney feeder - 03/29/21 12:52 PM

One of our lease members took the winch handle off and did not tighten the nut. I think an animal pushed in down in to the mud. Does anyone know what size and thread type it might be? I am thinking 7/16 or maybe 1/2 but thread type is still a carp shoot. I have a smaller winch and the nut for it is metric threads. It could be metric, SAE, or maybe even reverse but I doubt latter. Is that a Dutton-Lainson brake winch?

One of our lease members has an assortment. Not sure if he tried any of them.
I prefer the local Ace Hardware for stuff like this.

Like Smitty said that looks like a Dutton Lainson Brake winch. I have been using them for years building winch feeders and while I cannot tell you the size I can tell you that you are missing the spring and then the nut. Call or contact them and they can get you whatever you need.

I am going with a 1/2" x 20 thread

If it aint the right one, just get a bigger wrench and it will hold as good as Bobo's idea

Re: Lost winch nut on a Sweeney feeder - 04/25/21 09:23 PM

I bet you a beer that it is a 1/2-13. Looking at your tape measure you can see 16th's and your threads are coarser than that. That makes it a 13 thread as a 20 thread would be closer than the 16" marks. Good luck with the 20 thread, it might be able to be forced on and if you get it on, you will not have to worry about it coming off.

1/2"NF or one of the flavors of 12MM.

Might be a metric nut, I am seeing 5 almost 6 threads in a 1/4".
The cutout of the tape is 1/4". Definitely not a 13tpi bolt.

Looks to me like it's either a 7/16-20 or 1/2-20. Could be metric. I can't tell from the pic but it might be a left hand thread.

After looking at the DL website and the markings on this winch and recounting the threads, I believe you are correct. Being it was so old looking, I thought it was made in America. Duh, what was I thinking. Looks like I owe Stump_jumper a beer.

Yep or even 6010 or 6011. Quick and painless.

Is the head of the bolt visible?
If it says something like Class 10.9 or 12.8 it's metric
If it's got the radial lines on it, it's Standard

Don't know .size but the original nut size was 13/16" wrench, I have installed lots of D&L brake winches. The nut supplied should have had a self locking feature to it also here is the link.

https://www.dutton-lainson.com/products.php?cat=72

It is a 1/2"-13 self locking nut

The threads look like 1/2-20 to me. They appear damaged and don't think the correct nut will work without cleaning the threads up with a button die first.

Yep, that is about the cost of the nut that is now in my collection. Fortunately I took a collection. This feeder is very difficult to get to. We use a nasty rocky winding road that cedar choppers cut. It turned out that a 1/2" fine thread lug nut worked. It needs a lock nut on it which I now have.

Threads are not great but we got the nut on. Some of these winches have springs so we tried one. It was a no go. So we took the nut off. And used the washers. Too many washers first time so took it off again. These winches do not work properly if there is too much pressure on the handle. Winch is welded on the feeder otherwise we would have replaced by now. Due to the road in and out the winch replacement if needed will happen on site.
