Ammo Shortage and Practice

Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/14/21 05:00 PM

With obvious ammo shortages, I guess gun ranges will and have been experiencing a squeeze in business. Read in DMN article today where the CEO of Precision Ammunition thinks that the shortage could persist for 3-4 more years. He said the issue is raw component supply shortages as well as extreme cost markups on those raw components. With that said, I've got about 1.5 boxes ea. of my 4 rifle calibers, .308, .25-06, .30-.06 and 7MM-08. I like to shoot, 2-3 of those before each deer season but guess I won't before next. Also, have enjoyed targeting hogs and yotes whenever seen, but may have to reconsider in light of shortages; what kind of new measures may you all be taking going forward.

No practice for me unless it is handgun and range has some ammo to buy bulk.

Target species will still be targeted. Have plenty of ammo to last for a ling time in my chosen calibers.

1.5 boxes is way lower than i ever want to be....but i try to live by the “be prepared” motto i grew up with.

No need for practice at this point. Shooting is like driving a car you don’t just forget how to do it.

I’ve got a browning a-bolt .22 that feels pretty close to some of my hunting rifles. I’ll be practicing with it. I’ll take a shot with my hunting rifles before the season starts just to make sure they’re on. And then hope like he’ll we aren’t overrun with hogs again

Nah Tex, thanks for the send. Just can't get myself to buy ammo online yet. With my 4 rifles on target, I will probably just rotate them.

I put a scope in my Ruger 10/22 and sighted it in a few weeks ago. I forgot how fun the 22 is to shoot. I think I’m gonna practice with that set up since I have plenty of ammo.

That’s all I do is buy ammo online.

I’ll be popping hogs in the ear with my .22 and leaving the .243 for the muy grande. Does...still TBD.

I do not practice with a rifle.
I check zero about once a year and then kill stuff.
No need to waste ammo.

I continue to hit the range at least once a month but have cut back on the length of each visit. I spent too much not to enjoy shooting them throughout the year.

I could hunt for 50 years and still have ammo left over if I dont practice at all.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/16/21 04:59 AM

I’ve got a .22 to sight in. Hopefully can get it done in 5 shots. I’ve shot about a hundred .22 rounds the past few months. When this deal is over I plan to start shooting .22’s more because it’s cheap and fun.

I’m not much on centerfire or pistol practice. I’m not a range guy and don’t like making a bunch of noise on thr places I hunt.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/16/21 07:42 AM

Obviously not with 22’s but get into reloading fellas. I enjoy shooting the most out of my hobbies. I’d fish more but I’m not the greatest and it’s not easy getting friends to go. Shooting I love to do alone and it’s peaceful to me. I can’t shoot my normal 50-100 Rds a week with my match rifles at the moment but I’m good on 223 components for a good long while with my normal shooting regimen. I will say this at least for me precision shooting is a perishable skill. I’m not talking about dropping a deer at 100 yds. I talking about maintaining good breathing and shooting mechanics for targets at distance.

Definitely still go to the range but don’t shoot as much as I did before,

Only practice i'll be doing is on hogs. Luckily I have accumulated 1000's of rounds over the years for this exact reason.

How much practice does a guy need to shoot a deer out of a stand. Going to Africa different story.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/23/21 12:45 PM

Prior to this, I could take my revolver to the range and leisurely spend a couple of hours going through 3-4 boxes of ammo. Now I take one box, load five rounds at a time (it's a single action), and really slow down so that the box lasts almost an hour. Same principle on shooting my pistol, except it's much easier to blow through ammo with 10 round magazines, so I spend much less time shooting with that unless I load only a couple rounds per magazine.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/23/21 05:19 PM

I posted this in another thread. It helps conserve ammo too.

For you guys who don't shoot a lot, here's a trick. Ten years ago when I sighted my rifle in last I took a 2 poster board targets and a bore sight laser. I made a red mark where the laser hit the poster board and moved the crosshair to it at 25 yards. I fired 1 round down range at the red mark then moved my crosshairs to the POI and fired another round to test for a dead on 25yrd zero to get on paper. I put the laser back in to see where it hit the target at 100 yard and made a red mark, fired another round and moved the crosshairs to the POI. Then I put the laser back in to see where it hit, and made a green mark on the target. (I did do this with a rangefinder and at 100 yards i'm 1" above bullseye, it takes a few shots.) Now to test before a hunt, I put the laser in to hit the green mark, the crosshairs should line up on my last POI (1" above bullseye bullet hole). This gives a point of reference of where the muzzle is pointed on the paper and lets you know if your scope is still lined up with your desired POI. Keep the target in the gun case for reference. This is just something me and a buddy decided to play with because of a missed shot and being too cheap to use ammo at the range. Hope this is useful for some of you.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 02/23/21 07:31 PM

Dry fire and lots of it including using a laser to mix it up a bit (LaserHit - worked well for my handgun so just picked one up for 223 to try). Also going to work on getting on target faster (target identification, getting into the rifle, target acquisition, and taking a "shot"). This includes "shots" from an assortment of "rests". This way I can work the fundamentals and improve my success (hopefully) on getting a first shot kill come hunt time.

I'll still use coyotes and jack rabbits for live fire practice. I'll just be cutting back traditional range time even though I have quite a bit of ammo and components to last awhile.

Thank God there is no shortage of Air and Lead. I have been shooting Big Bore PCP's for 15 years. The investment in guns and support equipment is steep but in times like these, it's paying me back 4 fold. I can go out and shot 100 rounds through my .308 Texan LSS and it cost me maybe $6 in lead. And top that with sub-moa groups at 100 yards.

Has anyone use the AME Point bore laser? Looking for a good alternative to shooting a bunch of rounds without breaking the bank.

I shoot everyday. I shoot, go get my projectiles and shoot again... Wait, those are arrows.....

I do shoot the bb gun at the trap target. Reclaims about 60%. Can't get bbs locally either.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 03/05/21 03:32 PM

for hunting and hunting alone, i've got enough ammo between a variety of calibers to last a handful of years. its bothersome to just see the stuff disappear, i wish i had a little more especially for my kids rifle. but it'll be enough. I'm not a range person either, used to go as a kid a lot but in recent years there's just too much going on there. I'm fortunate enough to have a little country acreage relatively close to town where i've put pushed together a backstop and can do a little practicing there. I also like to keep the hunting place quiet and not do a lot of shooting that isn't hunting oriented.

Re: Ammo Shortage and Practice - 03/05/21 07:15 PM

Walked into Academy and all of the shelves were empty except they had about 100 boxes 7mm-08. Must have just put them out. My dad bought 2 boxes and I bought 2 boxes so that he could take home 4 boxes.

I got home yesterday and dug around in my ammo to see what I had. To my excitement I had about 500 rounds of 9mm that I forgot about. I guess when I ran low I decided to buy 2 bricks of it. It was like past self gave future self a present.
