Son Got a Nice 8 - 12/28/20 08:19 PM
My 13 year old has been with me quite a few hunts this season pursuing this nice 8. He eluded us for much of the season, but we made a last minute decision on 12/23 at lunchtime to pack up and head straight to the lease. Got there just about 3:40 or so. Crazy 20+ mph winds, so I was thinking it wouldn't be a good hunt. We saw 11 different deer, but they are were all very skittish and didn't stick around long at all. With less than 10 minutes left, my son saw our target buck appear from the brush. He waited patiently for him to come out and give a shot angle. One shot from the Sako 85 Finnlight .270 from 100 yards nailed him. I watched him kick up and dart into the thick mesquite brush. We waited about 15 minutes and found blood right way, but couldn't follow the trail for very long in the dark. Didn't matter though as we found him about 50 yards from the shot. Great hunt and I'm proud of his persistence and commitment.
