.45 LC and deer hunting

Has anyone ever taken a deer with a 45 long colt round?

More than one! With both revolver and rifle.

If you are shooting a gun that can handle stout loads, you can run neck and neck with full power .44 Mag rounds. Haven’t ever shot a deer with .45LC, but have put a few in the freezer with .44 Mag. I would expect the .45LC to perform just as well.

Shot a doe with a Winchester 94 Trapper in 45LC at 65 yards years ago. Picked her off her feet and flipped her over. Big bullet hits hard. Short range though.

I killed more than a few with my 45 Colt rifle. I've used 255 and 300 grain boolits to take WTD, axis, a bobcat and turkey. The largest taken was a 32" Axis with a 255 grain homemade boolit to the neck. I found a pair of bucks sleeping while checking my fences. Accuracy? The turkey was taken at 85 yards with open sights. Clays are easy at 110 yards from the bench.
Yes it works and yes it is limited. Reloaders have the advantage.

I have not with the 45 colt round, but have with other pistols. As stated above, if you are using a gun like a ruger black hawk you can load or purchase heavy loaded rounds that have power to spare. If you are using a small frame gun that you can't load hot it will still work, but you will be limited on power compared to something like a 44 mag, so plan you shots accordingly

Had the opportunity to chat with John a few years back at the Tulsa Wanenmacher gun show and handle a few of his wheel guns. I could have listened to him for hours. Great guy and loves to share his knowledge and experience on revolvers.

You can rewrite whatever you want. It rolled her. Is that more accurate for you?

I’ve yet to kill a deer with mine, but it’s pure hell on pigs, squirrels, and coyotes. Popping squirrels with a 300g hard cast is kinda expensive though. I take it deer hunting at least twice a week. Marlin 1894 and a Ruger Vaquero, both shooting Ruger only loads.

The kid dripped a pig with a 255g Cowboy Action load. Although I wouldn’t recommend it I was surprised at its performance.
