Age/Score help (Heavy 10) - 11/24/20 05:03 AM

This buck has become a regular at my feed pen and I was curious to know what ya'll think he ages/scores. I haven't got a chance to see him in person since most of his feeding has been at night. He would be my biggest buck to date if I get the opportunity to harvest him. Hopefully he will show up during the daylight during the Thanksgiving break and I can get a better look at him.

6+ and low 160s, great buck, tons on length and mass

First glance was 72 up and 95 down. Perspective is a little weird with an upward angle on the shots. 160 is safe IMO and 7 years old

Tlew, I like your style. On another score thread you mentioned a lack of perception with nothing else in the picture to compare to and now the upward angle of the shot changes perception. I agree on both points but Ive learned that most people think we are weird to think about stuff like that.
Anyway, this is good buck with plenty age(7?) and I would estimate high 50s. He looks like a real big body buck and if thats the case then everything skews a little bigger so he may grow once on the ground. My 2 cents.

Thanks brother. I'm still learning, and these are great for me to refine the practice. Not sure I'll ever be as good at stx or some other folks on here for measuring on the hoof

First of all...judging from pics off of a screen always make them look bigger. We need the originals to get better guesses on score. I would call him post mature and upper 150's... around 157 to 158 gross. He is a really great looking buck that lacks either main beam length or G4's length to get him into the 160's. He may look bigger with the original pics.

Side note - looks like you're feeding cotton seed.. May want to rethink that as it temporarily sterilizes bull cattle. May do same to deer and he looks like the kind you want breeding. May wanna Google it.

Proven not the case in Deer, and even cattle for most part(I fed it cattle for years. ) It’s almost impossible to get to those consumption percentages in deer anyway.

The Only real down fall out side of handling is cotton seed is very light in trace minerals. So minerals still need to be feed.

This is for another thread though.

up It’s was a feedlot type study, Doesn’t replicate well to deer for that very reason.

Nice buck - from the one pic of this season it looks like he dropped some mass, but it could be the distance and camera angle. Still a bit north of 150.

Thanks everyone for your input on this deer. The camera date is wrong on the below pictures so please ignore the dates. Here are some recent better quality photos of the deer. I agree that he looks like he needs a dirt nap and would be my largest buck to date by far.

STX2019, I just put him together again with your most recent pictures and came up exactly where I was at before

18 IS
44 Beams
33 Mass

95 Down

10 G1s
40 G2s & G3s
12 G4s
62 Up

157

Honestly, it doesn't matter if he is 148 or 162....he is mature and a great buck!
I hope you get him

If this is the same buck as earlier, I'll need to go closer to my earlier estimate of 160 and say, 155". To me, this one looks a little less wide but maybe since those earlier pics were nighttime only. Still saying 6.5+ on age.

I way over estimated him from the first pics. I now see right at 150. Still think he's 7. Beams are shorter than I thought and his width looks narrower also.

we have fed cottonseed for years - it does not sterilize deer unless they are penned and fed extensive amounts - so I suggest you google all the studies that indicate no negative impact on free range deer
