Age/Score # 13 2020 - 11/24/20 12:00 AM

Another one from my lease with slightly bigger bodies(for reference) than the other lease I usually post about.
The first pic is the same buck(or do you agree) from 2019.
The other two pics from yesterday right before the other buck came out that I posted about. Im glad they werent out there together, it might of got ugly. Misty rain and low light so not great pics. Always trying to learn from yall about age and score so feel free to do both years. Ill give you an obvious hint, he went downhill on antlers this year. Tail end of rut here.

Beautiful mature buck. Goes to show what happens when they get to age. 135ish Really want to guess him at 8 but looks more 7ish.

I am going to say 7 also. Score wise I am going to say upper 130's to right at 140.

Hook on the G2 + the musculature and markings makes it look like the same buck

2019 - 6.5 yo and 152
2020 - 7.5 yo and 138

Re: Age/Score # 13 2020 - 11/24/20 06:27 AM

I agree this is the same buck and he did decline from last year. I saw him quite a bit yesterday and he is massive in the body, biggest buck out there, thick main beams i think carry a lot of mass through. I estimated mid 30’s type frame, maybe pushing 140 if width and main beam length were good enough.

Interestingly i watched this guy cruise around all the doe and work a tree raw, while he was working the tree a younger (but still mature) buck was watching. This 8 eventually made his way up to the other mature buck who hadn't moved away from his spot, they sized each other up and they went at it for just a quick fight. The bigger bodied 8 above quickly was outmatched and moved on. The younger but certainly not bigger buck bested this guy. Turned out the younger buck had a hot doe he was tending who came out a short time later and the buck serviced the doe around sunset. Then they had dinner together.

Anyway, this 8 pt has age for sure. He has size for sure. I think this is a buck that would gain inches after being shot because his body size hides how big he really is. Just my opinion.

Tough one freerange

Looked 6.5 to me last year but looks 8 this year to me

low to Mid 130s I think this year and probably 140ish last year.

Really cool deer.
Let me know if you need someone to ground check him for ya!

This is not a Texas deer..so you are not factoring that into your age and score.

Even if this deer is 250 on the hoof this is what I see

17 IS
43 Beams
33 Mass
93 on frame (and I think I may be high here)

G1s 9
G2s 22
G3s 11
42 up

135 (high side I think)

If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.... grin I think you are a tad low on down frame.

I gotta go with ILBB on this one, but it could be a little deceiving if he's one of those northern type bucks that could dress over 250....

Thanks stxrm & hwy72

I just hope they get him on the ground so we can find out because it doesn't matter if he is 129 or 145.....it's my kinda buck!
I just love those old bruiser 8 points! rifle

Re: Age/Score # 13 2020 - 11/25/20 03:41 PM

Well, I havent weighed him cause hes running around still. But, based on history of other deer hes not THAT huge bodied. He may field dress 160 or 170. Fairly new to this property and it has very little hunting history so Im not sure the weights but Ive eye balled a bunch of em live. Iluv and STX, yall are only about 5 or 6' different in your estimates so I think you are splitting hairs. Ive always said that trying to score on the hoof that even an expert should be happy to be within 5" either way.
It is interesting cause my hunting partner who is new to the area/property as well always scores very close to me on the lease we hunt together in NWTx but on this place he is consistently 10" higher than me. He must be giving more credit to body size than me. Another problem is that none of us will kill that deer so we likely wont ever know.

For body size reference, the family killed this the other day. He is a slick 8 that we scored at 148. Hanging there field dressed I weighed him at 190. The landowner said that was the heaviest he could remember off the place. This buck in question isn’t that big body or horn.

How old was this deer?

Re: Age/Score # 13 2020 - 11/25/20 05:34 PM

We think he was 6. Killed him right before the rut. Notice the big knot under left ear. Full of puss. Had it last year also they said. Family let a friend kill it as a "management" buck.

This one was killed off the same property just a couple hours ago. He field dressed 150 for reference. Tail end of rut so hes likely run down. Feel free to score him if want.

148-150 in light of new information I’m upsizing. 163-165

Im gonna go ahead and interject before a hole gets dug any deeper. That most recently posted 10 point is 21 wide and has a 13" tine. The man with him is a large man. One other hint is that the 150 weight was on the same scale as the 190 but I wasnt there for the weigh in and I would of guessed his weight would of been more but thats what was reported.

I know the gross score and all i am gonna say is he must carry some mass to get there. 21” inside assume a 21” main beam (must he missing some here) and tine length of 13, 13, 13, 12, 7, 5, and brows of 4.5 and 6. Means mass needs to be in the range of 16-17” both sides. If he has an extra couple of inches on each main to go 22-23, then he gets to his gross. Really good buck the pic doesn’t do as much justice to due to the size of the shooter.

The funny thing is the shooters hands make the mass look pretty wimpy. But then again, the shooter makes me look like a wimpy dude too, so its understandable.

Did i give too much away FR?
