Wyoming mule deer

Went up for our deer and cow elk hunt this past week. Battled drifting snow and cold for a couple of days then the sun came out and melted off the snow cover in most spots.
Pre rut is just starting, mature bucks are travelling and staging with doe groups right now. saw plenty of 1 1/2 bucks first couple of days then on Oct 30 everything changed, big boys showed up.
Found this guy bedded on a ridge line, looked left to glass and spotted some elk in a crack bedded down.
When the buck stood up I took my shot, 243 yards, he went down within 10 yards. The cow elk just looked around and then bedded down again, they were about 800 yards away.
We took care of the buck and loaded him up then made the short drive around behind the elk and stalked the cow. She died in a steep crack, made for a hard 75 yard pack down. Could have been much worse. Unfortunately , I think she is 20 years old, front teeth are worn all the way down to the gums.

That's a great looking mule deer. I had a CO mule deer hunt last week and agree that the rut is very close.

You posted earlier a picture of you and a bull elk. How are you able to get both a bull and cow elk license in Wyoming? I lived there for 5 years and you got one or the other?

We can get 1 full price elk license and up to 2 reduced price cow tags.
You can apply for the full price and a reduced price cow/calf tag.
I took my bull on my general license.

Reduced price licenses are available in several areas now and are a random draw. We use area 6-6 cow licenses and hundreds are left over every year as the area is mostly private land.
Some areas open very early for cows and have restrictions on private or public land. Look over the Type 6, 7 and 8 licensed for cows, they are all reduced price.

Several year back they allowed hunters to get up to 3 elk licenses if the cow tags were in certain areas. For many years 1 licenses was the limit then up to 2 with a cow tag, now up to 3 with 2 cow tags.
